GHANA Beats Tunisia To Meet ZAMBIA In Semi-Finals

Ghana needed extra time to beat Tunisia 2-1 in their African Nations Cup quarter-final on Sunday and book a semi-final meeting with Zambia.

A goalkeeping howler gifted Dede Ayew the 101st-minute winner after Aymen Mathlouthi dropped a cross right into the path of the Ghanaian midfielder.

Ghana captain John Mensah retuned from injury to score from a corner after just 10 minutes but Saber Khlifa equalised before halftime.

Tunisia finished with 10 men after an elbow from Aymen Abdennour earned him a red card with 12 minutes left in extra time.

its over for zambia. congratulations for reaching semis. Based on previous figures zambias chances of beating Ghana are very slim. Its Ghana and Ivory Coast in the finals.

“We won’t give up for anything,” these were the words of Zambian coach Herve Renard in an interview with Cafonline.com ahead of their semi final clash against Ghana on Wednesday at the Estadio de Bata in the coastal city of Bata.
For the Frenchman, his team has travelled a long road till this stage, and with a place final beckoning; they will entertain no setback that will hinder the realization of that dream. Having achieved their primary objective of a semi final berth, a place at the final will serve the perfect coronation for their impressive campaign at the 28th edition of the showpiece African football event.
“Our target was to reach the semi final, because Zambia has missed out since 1996. Two years ago in Angola, we lost at the quarter final and we learnt from that experience. This time, we are a better team.”
Labelling the semi final clash against the Black Stars, a team he had a stint with as an assistant to Claude Le Roy four years ago, “the biggest game of his coaching career”, Renard is banking on the gen to flash out the Stars.
“It is the most important game of my career. I experienced the semi final as an assistant with Ghana in 2008. When you play at the semis, your target is to reach the final and we are going to do that.
“Ghana are the best team in terms of consistency in Africa and are favourites. I was with them in 2008 and 80 percent of the current were part of that team. We won’t give up for anything. Also we have to be tactically efficient.”
He said his team has the potential to go farthest in the competition despite being overlooked in many quarters and is urging his players to sacrifice for the nation after coming this far.
“Zambia has only missed out in 2004 in recent times and have an advantage with players who have been together for long time. We have no big names and the star is the team. Players like Emmanuel Mayuka, Christopher Katongo, and Rainford Kalaba are often underrated because they are not playing in major leagues abroad, but they are very good players.
“I have a good base of players, who can deliver the result. I told my players we have few days to go and they have to sacrifice for the country and make all Zambians proud.”
With teams such as Morocco, Tunisia, Senegal and Gabon crashing out of the tournament and the no-show of the likes of holders Egypt, Cameroon, Algeria and Nigeria; Renard believes the time to reach the final and win the ultimate is now.
“We have a chance to win the title. Zambia lost in two finals (1974 and 1994), and this generation can go the extra mile than their predecessors.”
The winner of the Zambia-Ghana semi final clash will face either Cote d’Ivoire or Mali in the February 12 final in Libreville, Gabon.

Coach Duncan cautions Black Stars ahead of Zambia clash

From: JOY Sports staff Last Updated: February 7, 2012, 10:00 am

Ex Black Starlets and Ashanti Gold Coach David Duncan has advised Coach Goran Stevanovic to play a system that will allow his team to use the wings to create more chances against the Zambians in their semi final clash on Wednesday.

According to him, the Black Stars can beat the Zambians by creating more chances with wing play.

“We should make sure we put in a lot of crosses to disorganize the defence of the Zambians”. He told JOY Sports

David Duncan describes Zambian goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene, a player he worked with at South African side Free State Stars as the inspiration of the Zambian team.

“He is great and a fantastic goalkeeper and shooting straight at him will be difficult to beat so we should deploy the strategy of using the wings for the strikers to connect”.

The Black Stars are in Bata the capital of Equatorial Guinea ahead of Wednesday’s semi final clash with Zambia.

Ghana to ‘raise game’ Against Zambia
as they target fifth Nations Cup

Ghana have dispelled doubts over their chances of winning a fifth Africa Cup of Nations title following their lacklustre display against Guinea.

The Black Stars topped their Group D on and defeated Tunisia in the quarter finals, but only after drawing 1-1 with the Guineans, who were reduced to 10 men in the second half.

Assistant coach Kwesi Appiah says his side will improve for wednesday semi-final against Zambia in n Bata.

“I believe we will raise our game to reach the finals,” he said.

“We will rise to the occasion because with the Ghanaian character, we will always handle the pressure” Asamoah Gyan Ghana striker “In our opening game against Botswana, we did not play at our level. But for the second game against Mali, we played at about 70 per cent of our capacity. “Every game is different and we will treat them so.”

John Pantsil, who captained the four-time champions against both Mali and Guinea in the absence of John Mensah, said the victory over Tunisia has boasted the moral of the team.”This is a crucial and tricky game,” the full-back said. “It won’t be easy because Zambia are a very good team, who pass the ball around very well.”

Ghana are buoyed by the news that Mensah will be fully fit for this semi-final, after a thigh injury forced the Black Stars captain who was replaced by Vorsah in the match against the Tunisians.

The defender scored the opener in the 2-1 defeat of tunisia prior to his injury, , but his return will help against the Zambians

“It will be difficult against one of the best teams in this competition,” added star striker Asamoah Gyan.

“But we will rise to the occasion because with the Ghanaian character, we will always handle the pressure.”

Ghana, who won the trophy in 1963, 1965, 1978 and 1982, have been studying the Zambian team as the West Africans seek to end their 30-year wait for another Nations Cup title.

“We have watched video tapes of the Zambia team, and they are a very good team,” Appiah added.

Chitalu is Zambia’s record goal scorer with 76 goals. This includes 4 goals scored in the 1980 Olympics Qualiyfing and final tournament matches, where Zambia featured its main team.

Some of his goal scoring exploits include:

81 goals in all competitions in 1968 (including 11 for Zambia)
45 goals in all competitions in 1969, 4th behind top goal scorer Robertson Zulu who had 64 goals
51 goals in all competitions in 1971
107 goals in all competitions in 1972
11 goals at CECAFA ’78 which is a CECAFA record

No other Zambian player has come close when it comes to goal scoring for the national team.

Chitalu’s record number of 107 goals in 1972 is taken with a pinch of salt in other football circles. It is however not as far-fetched as it appears, considering that many strikers in Zambia during the period would score in excess of 50, as evidenced by Zulu’s 64 in 1969 and Chitalu himself with 81 goals in 1968.

Chitalu is also one of Zambia’s most capped players.
