An Australian great-grandfather claimed to be the world’s oldest graduate on Friday after being awarded a clinical science degree at age 97.
Allan Stewart, who took his first degree in 1936 and completed a law degree in 2006, said he kept going back to university “to keep mentally active.”
The Sydney-born former dentist told Australia’s AAP news agency that retirement was not about putting your feet up.
“People should never use the excuse that ‘I’m too old to study’ or ‘I’ve left my run too late,’“ he said. “It’s never too late to expand your mind, make new friends and challenge yourself to achieve something worthwhile.”
He said that mastering computers was the hardest part of getting back into studying.
“I was self-taught in that respect,” he said, noting that “all of the assignments I had to do on computer and send it up to the university by electronic submission.” – Sapa-dpa
