This is long overdue. Zambia has benefitted from the skilled manpower that insttution has devloped over the years. We now need a think tank in Zambia. Where are the brains, each country of academicsa at least boasts of one type or another. What about R&D to add avalue

Evelyn hone could be turned into a University and offer degree courses while NIPA and other trades insititutes can offer certificate and diploma courses respectively.
Too many fake universities have been formed without appropriate support infrustructure. Some have just 4 rooms and they call it a university, thats a mockery to education .
Does gorvernment have minimum standards required to set up a university?
Ntekwe
October 16, 2012 at 2:37 pm
Bakalamba the standards are there and the systems are already in place. But when you have a Director of Standards (TEVETA) such as Kazonga, now MMD MP in Eastern Province, the chances that these standards will be enforced are very little.

But let’s first of all improve the existing Universities by sorting out issues of accomodation,Capacity of Libraries, study material and manpower etc, then can we think of converting these colleges into Universities.
Otherwise it is pointless to have many Universities when the few we have leave much to be desired in terms of academic standards.

The problem of accommodation at the current three universities can be sorted out by opening more universities. The congestion been experienced is because everyone want to be at the university Ba Mr Pure Kolwestan

Do not just upgrade the Higher education sector. Consider the foundation first, we have Pupils Still Sitting On The Floor In Mufumbwe. How will this work ? considering the size of nortech and facilities like the libraries. The institution has to meet certain criteria for it to be called a university. The idea is good but lack detailed information. May be it the reporting of ba tumfweko, always mis-representing or lack of proper reporting.

But the way has government ever looked into the conditions of service for workers in these tevet colleges which are management board run.If the government is really serious let it dissolve these boards in the tevet colleges and take over completely and put workers on government payroll rather than contract jobs with poor salaries below what those in government with similar qualifications are getting

Luanshya Trades and In-service Training College can be merged under one management. They have adequate space and infrastructure for further development. This can increase their enrolment levels. We need more training schools to absorb the numerous school leavers

why is Zambia fascinated by the name university. who said a college cant confer degrees? how about MIT, my understanding is a college offers specialised courses eg college of medicine, college of engineering, business college, etc. could confer Bachelor, Master and doctoral degrees without calling them uni. Zambia stil thinks to get a degree an institution needs to be called a uni, its not correct. Late underson mazoka got his masters in mechanical engineering from Union College New York and he was a powerful engineer! Lets have specialised colleges and forget the nonsense about ‘uni’ thing. then build proper infrastructure.

Right Move. GRZ needs to partner with private sector. Most syllabus’are out dated and parallel to current industrial practice. This should start from the primary level. The quality of our graduates is very low. GRZ also needs to equip high instutitions of learning with state of the art laboratories and engae into partnership with oversees universities.
