SCANDAL: ZAMBEEF Injects Meat With Aldehyde, A Chemical Used For Embalming Dead Bodies, Then Sells Meat To Zambians

zambeefAn analysis of 8 beef products imported into the country by Zambeef, seeing by health inspectors confirmed the presence of Aromatic Aldehyde.

Health experts say the aromatic adehydes discovered in Zambeef beef is used to embalm dead bodies and can cause organ cancers like cancer of the blood in human. And the Competition and Consumer Protection commission says it is aware about Zambeef’s imported products been under scrutiny.

According to an analysis to the Minstry of health’s food and control laboratory conducted in Lusaka last week, aromatic Aldehyde was detected in all the samples

The health experts told journalists yesterday that Aromatica Adehydes which they compare to Benzene or jet fuel are powerful preservatives chemicals that are dangerous for human beings as they cause diseases such as leukamia. fThese are mainly ised for embalming dead bodies, for example if someone dies here in Zambia and they come from UK, in order for the body to reach the Uk fresh, we inject the Aromatica Aldehyde in the veins” Said the health experts.

The government should investigate and do more tests other than the toxicology report alone. Do DNA test on so called Beef. It could even be Horse meat that people have been consuming all along . Europe is currently in Horse meat export and import scandal including UK. There is a possibility that could be horse meat too. People running businesses sometimes forget about quality as they are only interested in money. This problem is not only in Zambia alone but in developed countries as well. The country requires cooperation and vigilance from all angles for the government to deal with this sophisticated crime

This is far worse than eating horse meat, which has been eaten in parts of the world for a long time: we are talking about feeding the Zambian population with ‘dead body embalming chemicals’??!! What could possibly worse than that???

And the Minister of Health came on the 7pm News and confirmed that Zambeef meat tested positive for this chemical, so why have thye not shut them all down until they clear ALL this badly contaminated meat, fine them very heavily and ensure that it does not happen again – EVER?!!

The Government must revoke the License and close down that company. We do not need them anymore, they are dangerous criminals.

Almonds, apricots, apples and cherry kernels, contain significant amounts of amygdalin. This glycoside breaks up under enzyme catalysis into benzaldehyde, hydrocyanic acid and two molecules of glucose.

        Reactions
On oxidation, benzaldehyde is converted into the odorless benzoic acid, which is a common impurity in laboratory samples. Benzyl alcohol can be formed from benzaldehyde by means of hydrogenation. Reaction of benzaldehyde with anhydrous sodium acetate and acetic anhydride yields cinnamic acid, while alcoholic potassium cyanide can be used to catalyze the condensation of benzaldehyde to benzoin. Benzaldehyde undergoes disproportionation upon treatment with concentrated alkali (Cannizzaro reaction): one molecule of the aldehyde is reduced to the corresponding alcohol and another molecule is simultaneously oxidized to sodium benzoate.

    Nutritional Changes by Freezing

Meat is frozen without any prior treatment, unlike vegetables which have to undergo a preliminary blanching process to destroy enzymes involving considerable loss of water-soluble nutrients. So there is little or no loss of nutrients during the freezing procedure, nor, so far as there is reliable evidence, during frozen storage – apart from vitamin E.

Proteins are unchanged during frozen storage but fats are susceptible to rancidity. Pork and poultry meat are more susceptible since they are richer in unsaturated fatty acids than other meats, and comminuted meat is also very susceptible to rancidity because of the large surface area which is accessible to oxygen.

The vitamin E is damaged because the first products of fat rancidity, hydroperoxides, are stable at the low temperature and oxidise the vitamin. At room temperature they break down to harmless peroxides, aldehydes and ketones, so that vitamin E is more stable at room temperature than during frozen storage.

The losses incurred in frozen meat mostly take place when the meat is thawed, and juices are exuded containing soluble proteins, vitamins and minerals. This is termed “dripthaw” and the amount depends on the length of time of ageing (time between slaughter and freezing), whether frozen as carcass or meat cuts, conditions of freezing and speed of thawing; it varies between 1% and 10% of the weight of the meat and is usually about 5%.

There is some loss of nutrients when the meat is cooked after thawing; results published in the scientific literature tend to measure the combined losses from the original fresh meat to the final cooked product. Unfortunately the results vary so much that it is not possible to draw conclusions.

It must be emphasised that the variations are largely due to difficulties in analysis of the B vitamins, and to differences in conditions and methodology – even results from the same laboratories are inconsistent. This is illustrated very clearly by results published from one group of investigators who examined pork loin after freezing and storage at -12°C and 24°C and subsequent cooking at regular intervals over one year for changes in thiamin, riboflavin and pyridoxine (Mikkelsen, Rasmussen and Zinck 1984). Despite constant experimental conditions analyses at two monthly intervals showed wide fluctuations, especially for thiamin, which were attributed by the authors to difficulties in analytical methods.

It was tentatively concluded after storage at -12°C and cooking that about 90% of the thiamin was retained but no firm conclusions could be drawn about other vitamins. No conclusions could be drawn about storage at the lower temperature!

For riboflavin about 90% was retained at -12°C and 100% after storage at -24°C and cooking, although these results were also variable.

For pyridoxine 80% was retained when stored at -12°C and cooked but the results were erratic.

In the same report ground beef was examined only after 1 year storage and showed 80% retention of thiamine, 85% of riboflavin and 100% of pyridoxine at both temperatures.

A summary of earlier work (Fennema 1975) suggested that losses during freezing and storage of meat and poultry for 6 – 12 months at -18°C but excluding subsequent cooking, ranged between zero and 30% for thiamin, riboflavin, niacin and pyridoxine. A survey of frozen meals analysed after freezing, storage and cooking reported losses of up to 85% of thiamin, 55% of vitamin A, 33% vitamin E, 25% niacin and pyridoxine (De Ritter et al 1974).

Little research in this area has been reported in recent years and this limited number of reports illustrates the difficulty of making even generalisations about the stability of vitamins in frozen meat products.

      Uses
It is commonly employed to confer almond flavor. Benzaldehyde is used chiefly as a precursor to other organic compounds, ranging from pharmaceuticals to plastic additives. The aniline dye malachite green is prepared from benzaldehyde and dimethylaniline. It is a precursor to certain acridine dyes as well. Via aldol condensations, benzaldehyde is converted into derivatives of cinnamaldehyde and styrene. The synthesis of mandelic acid starts from benzaldehyde:

    3. Smoking

Smoke for treatment of meat products is produced from raw wood. Smoke is generated through the thermal destruction of the wood components lignin and cellulose. The thermal destruction sets free more than 1000 desirable or undesirable firm, liquid or gaseous components of wood.

These useful components contribute to the development of the following desirable effects on processed meat products:

Meat preservation through aldehydes, phenols and acids
    (anti-microbial effect)
Antioxidant impact through phenols and aldehydes
    (retarding fat oxidation)
Smoke flavour through phenols, carbonyls and others
    (smoking taste)
Smoke colour formation through carbonyls and aldehydes
    (attractive colour)
Surface hardening of sausages/casings through aldehydes (in particular for more rigid structure of the casing)

The most known undesirable effect of smoking is the risk of residues of benzopyrene in smoked products which can be carcinogenic if the intake is in high doses over long periods. With normal eating habits, a carcinogenic risk is normally not associated with moderately smoked food such as smoked meat products.

Depending on the product, smoke is applied at different temperatures. There are two principal smoking techniques:

    Cold smoking
    Hot smoking

The principle of both methods is that the smoke infiltrates the outside layers of the product in order to develop flavour, colour and a certain preservation effect.
