Meet The South African King Whose Remarks Launched The Xenophobic Attacks

must readZulu King Godwill Zwelithi’s utterances on March 23rd launched the Zenophobic attacks in South Africa and he had refused to apologize, even after finding out that his people have maimed, killed and destroyed businesses belonging to black foreigners. He’s still insisting that foreigners should go back to their countries but tried to save face by saying attacking the foreigners is not how to chase them away. He wants the government to do it legally.

During a speech in last month, Zwelithini called for the deportation of foreign nationals living in the country, saying it was unacceptable locals were being made to compete with people from other countries for the few economic opportunities available. King Zwelithi said “foreigners must pack their bags and go home”.

His three major complaints and why he wanted foreigners to go were; 1. SA traders in the townships said they could not compete with the prices that foreign-owned businesses were selling their products. 2; foreigners involved in crime. 3. Lack of respect shown by foreigners to locals.
1Addressing Pongolo community members during a moral regeneration even, Zwelithini accused government of failing to protect locals from the “influx of foreign nationals”.He said;
“Most government leaders do not want to speak out on this matter because they are scared of losing votes. As the king of the Zulu nation, I cannot tolerate a situation where we are being led by leaders with no views whatsoever.
“We are requesting those who come from outside to please go back to their countries. The fact that there were countries that played a role in the country’s struggle for liberation should not be used as an excuse to create a situation where foreigners are allowed to inconvenience locals. I know you were in their countries during the struggle for liberation. But the fact of the matter is you did not set up businesses in their countries,” he said.
His comments were widely condemned with the SA DA describing it “highly irresponsible’ ‘Particularly given the recent spate of xenophobic attacks in South Africa, he should do the right thing – retract and apologise,”

He didn’t and his spokesman went on record to say the King had nothing to apologize for, that he meant every word he said.
“I think the people who’re complaining are misinterpreting his speech. He didn’t say foreigners must be attacked or harassed. The king was talking about foreigners who are here illegally. Some are involved in serious crimes like drug and human trafficking. We don’t need such people in our country so the king is right.” His spokesman said
After the killing spread across different cities, the king has relented a little and is planning to speak to his people this Monday in an effort to quell the attacks. He’s expected to address the public directly and clarify his statement and ask his people to stop the violence which his words started

Ungrateful Swines. I know see why white South Africans hate the black South Africans, Apartheid should never have ended. I read some uneducated South African idiots tweet insulting Zambians, If it weren’t for Apartheid they would never have had that kind of infrastructure. The moment blacks take over, crime is up, load shedding and potholes are created. The sweat of the white man has been destroyed by their dull government. To hell with Bafana Bafana.

All condemning NEZ are insane and need mental check up at chainama. Some idiots fail to reason. They want everybody to support something that has failed. Know that all are not pf or upnd cadres.
It is economic mismanagement by responsible failing finance minister Chikwanda leading to such bad news.
Improve the chikwandanomics and develop uth some of these things may be lessened.
The concerns by RSA citizens are genuine. But the action taken is not good.
NEZ’s point is genuine. Govt need to improve the economy.

If South Africa is really worried about its standing in Africa its government officials should read various sites from different African countries. I have read plenty including francophone ones and there is noone where views support South Africa. Everyone is condemning the country. They a truly isolated country on the ground. Its only top government officials on the continent who are trying to pretend to make attempts at healing the rift caused by xenophobia in Sasa Filika

The King exhibits great lack of knowledge. He doesnt even know his history. The fact that his people came all the way from Congo into South Africa in the 15th century and the fact that some of these people again left Kwazulu in the 19th century-like me Zwangendaba-to spread into the rest of Southern Africa should have made him more careful about being too territorial. He should leave that kind of talk to uneducated little boys who know nothing about Africa.
The white man is the one who came and confined africans including Zulus to the places they now live in after 1870. After the white man partitioned Africa africans stopped moving from one part of the continent to the other because the white man introduced borders and passports and visas which we never had before. I have never heard an African King say xenophobic statements such as this because all of them know that the whole continent is their home.
Even after Europe divided it the hope by progressive africans is that it can become one borderless mass of land again

      April 18, 2015 at 11:19 pm

You are very right. Africans are such robots! A white man came and drew borders between them and when he left they are still hanging on to these borders as if they are godsent! South africans are still hanging on to all the separations the white man created like racism, tribalism and the one they were taught which said that south africa is not africa. Africa the racist told them, is beyond Limpopo river. This is brainwashing. African govts always need to untrained sh their people after getting into office. By hanging on to what the white man did you are agreeing that he was right. Right to divide you. Right to oppress you right to enslave you.

“………But the fact of the matter is you did not set up businesses in their countries,” Well I do not think King Zwelithini has got it right here unless he wants to admit that those of his compatriots that were hosted by neighboring countries during the liberation struggle subsisted totally on handouts from their hosts! Some of us know of South African neighbors who established businesses to help themselves as well as help inject into the liberation coffers proceeds from their businesses. The king is hateful!

My landlord is a south african so lets see what his gonna say when time cames for me to pay my rents after all his countrymates are doing. Deep down you know that if your economy was put right by UPND we wouldnt see the need to become economic migrants

You are being foolish. It’s the white man who indoctrinated them to not think. Or to think the way King Zwelithini is thinking. If you bring him back you will be a victim of his machinations. He left black people in an unthinking mode so they could start wishing he was around.

as if that will change the fact that zambia’s economy is poor which leads to many becoming economic migrants and reliant on other countrys’ economies. Let us face the root cause of this. It is poor governance and lack of accountability which is the pfs only achievements since 2011.

It’s not right to kill each other no matter what. The King was right but didnt use wisdom. Also political leaders should learn to listen Than acting when things get out of hand. Same in Zambia it pains to see how foreigners are busy trading, buying land, getting NRC etc illegally,no work permit,no nothing but Your People are suffering. Am not in support of killing foreigners but let certain jobs and businesses be for the locals who voted for You.
