POLICE in Lusaka have opened a docket against President Edgar Lungu’s political adviser Kaizer Zulu for shooting at Lusaka businessman Enock Kavindele junior.
Zulu, however, has told police that he fired two gun-shots in self defence after two ‘unknown’ people attacked him.
According to two police complaints separately filed by Enock and his brother Kaunda, at Long Acres Community Police post, the shooting incident happened on Friday around 03:00 hours at Lusaka’s Chrismar Hotel.
Enock, who is former vice-president, Kavindele’s son, reported that Zulu beat him up and fired at his vehicle as he attempted to escape from the State House official, who allegedly turned violent following an altercation.
Kavindele Junior, of Chipalo Park Mukuyu Road Leopards Hill Lusaka, reported that Zulu beat him up following a quarrel in a bar at Chrismar Hotel and that the President’s adviser then called security to throw him out of the nightclub.
He further explained that when he was dragged outside the bar, Zulu threatened to kill him and pulled a pistol, which he fired instantly.
“He fired two shot’s at my vehicle, Elgrand, but I managed to escape, with injuries from the beating,” complained Kavindele.
Kavindele junior’s brother, Kaunda of the same home address, also told police at Long Acres that Zulu, in a group of 12 others, kicked him repeatedly, following a quarrel, and that he sustained a bruised hand.
“I was beaten by 12 people on Saturday 19th September 2015 at 02:30 hours at Chrismar Hotel and in the process I sustained a bruised left hand from the kick. I can identify all the 12 people,” explained Kaunda in a police report.
But Zulu, of house number 7666 Woodlands, Lusaka, and of contact number 0977826222, in his police report claimed that two ‘unknown’ people followed him at a table where he was having dinner around 03:00 hours, with his colleague and started attacking him.
“Two male persons that cannot be identified went to the table at which M’ Kaizer Zulu and his colleagues were having dinner at Chrismar Hotel and attacked them. In the process, the same [unknown males] injured one of M’Kaizer Zulu’s colleagues. Acting in self-defence, M’ Kaizer Zulu fired two gun-shots in the air. That’s how the two men ran away. [This] occurred on 19/09/2015 at around 03:00 hours,” read the police report that Zulu filed at Woodlands Police Station.
But a Chrismar Hotel employee who witnessed the incident, narrated that the quarrel started over a woman.
“Chioneka Mr Kaizer enze na mukazi pa table pamene anankala and futi kwenze mubabe uja ati ni bululu waba Kavindele amene anamuziba mukazi uyo. So uja mubabe ndiye kuitana muzimai uja enze na Mr Kaizer. But Mr Kaizer eve anabwela azanda vija mwaona (It seems Kaizer was with a woman and there was this huge man [Kavindele junior] who knows this woman and started calling her, but Kaizer got angry),” the witness narrated.
“Kuchoka apo tinaona che Mr Kaizer ayamba kufwemba mubabe uja wemene, apo ndishi batukanana. Nayeve Mr Kaizer apo ndiye kukamba ati, I can kill you, I can f**k you up. Ndiye pamene banabwela batiitana ise manje kudonsa mubabe panja. After tafika panja, Mr Kaizer anabwela achosa pistol no liza ma bullet yabili, then bonse bantu paja banabwela pathaba. Ndiye pamene na motoka inaonongekela pamene apo. After mubabe uja nabanzake bathaba, Mr Kaizer anabwela abwelela mu bar muja kuyendo lipila bill yabaja banthu (Next, we saw Kaizer and the huge man in a tussle while insulting each other. Kaizer then told the huge man that I can kill you, I can f**k you up. That’s when they called us and we started dragging the huge man outside. When we got outside, Kaizer drew a pistol and fired two shots. Then all the people started running away, that’s how the car was damaged. After the huge man run away, Kaizer went back to the bar and paid the bill for the huge man.)”
A receptionist who was on duty on the eventful night, said he did not know the details of what transpired but remembered that a number of guests at the Hotel were scared after they heard gun shots.
Meanwhile, police sources disclosed that Kaizer has instructed police to arrest Kavindele’s sons.
“After Kavindele and his brother went to Long Acres police station to follow up their complaint against Kaizer this afternoon (yesterday) they were called by police at Woodlands for questioning. But so far no one has been arrested,” said the sources.
In April, Anti Corruption Commission director general Rosewin Wandi, wrote President Lungu, informing him that the commission was investigating a case where his aide, Kaizer, allegedly received US$200, 000 from a Chinese national to fix an appointment with the Head of State.
