PROFESSOR Oliver Saasa says he is wondering what kind of advice President Lungu is getting from ministers like Chishimba Kambwili, who cannot reason with people offering government solutions to the economic crisis.
The Post on Thursday carried a story where Prof Saasa warned that Zambia would soon experience rising inflation, deteriorating social conditions, worsening poverty levels, malnutrition, high morbidity, diarrhoeal diseases and a total collapse of all the socioeconomic indicators.
But Kambwili accused Prof Saasa of being a prophet of doom and rubbished his observations on the depreciation of the kwacha, saying, “I wonder why professors like that should be preaching messages of doom to the people. Nothing of that kind will ever happen under the PF leadership. That professor is daydreaming.”
In an interview, Prof Saasa wondered if it was a question of Kambwili not being sufficiently schooled.
“Now, when the man says I am daydreaming, I wonder what that means because the man has been to university, he actually graduated from Copperstone University, of which I was chancellor. Therefore, I do not want to believe that he is not schooled sufficiently to appreciate these issues. This is too elementary and for me; it worries me if this is the quality of the advisors our Head of State enjoys,” Prof Saasa said.
“Then my worry is more with the President as to what sort of information he is being availed. I am surprised that he came out like that. Reacting is fine but coming out in the manner that he did surprised me. It worries me if this is the calibre of people that are tasked with helping and guiding the Head of State.”
Saasa said as a person who was free to express himself in any way, he disagreed with what Kambwili said about him.
“He said I am a prophet of doom and a UPND cadre! I think that was very sad. It is very important that for those that are privileged to serve in public office, before they make statements of a nature that touches on national development, they must be guarded in the language they use and in the facts they bring to the table,” he said.
Prof Saasa said there was nothing wrong with his statement on the kwacha and that he was simply stating what was prevailing.
“When you rubbish it in the manner he tried to do, like all that I said was daydreaming, you would start to look at your article because firstly, the point I was making is that the kwacha is likely to worsen and as the kwacha worsens, that will lead to the cost of living going up as a result of igniting inflation and that when inflation increases, people that will suffer more are the poor in terms of access to a nutritionally adequate food basket. When you do not access a nutritionally adequate food basket, malnutrition follows; those are the challenges that are associated with lack of food. And therefore we should brace for such,” he said.
Prof Saasa said he did not go further to state what had caused the problem apart from mentioning China.
“We have to realise that the government has a role to play like everybody else. When we talk about the government, I am talking about collectively from the time the country got independent. There are a number of things that we needed to do, one of which is the diversification of the economy because now we are caught up in a mess because of dependence on copper. What is happening in China has affected us,” said Prof Saasa.

The Prof should not only worry about the calibre of people who advises the head of sate, but also what kind of a president who surrounds himself with that kind of calibre! This is worrisome in the sense that people like Kambwili are alot in PF, the head of state is not a person who is into QUALITY but quantity. Issues of national development is a problem we are all facing across Zambia, but just like Edgar PF cadres and their halfbaked divisors all they do is rubbish advice even from intellectuals.

In my view the professor should be more worried that his Univerity produced such a product. No wonder pipo are saying he is useless.Honestly Kambwili is now part of the Alumni of this so called Copperstone University?I cant even recommend this University to my worst enemy.

He talks as if he is peaking to babies. who hasn’t seen wat da proff was saying! is da depreciation of da kwacha, da rise of food prices a secret? whether pf or not pf we are all Zabians living under one Zambian roof and feeling da heat! bread is almost K10, 1 chicken egg is K1.5, A live chicken is now K50.00 which was k30, K35. you once threatened DSTV but now there going to increase further en u er not going to do anything jst like u failed last time! a serious question is, can anything good come from CS UNIVERSITY?

Professor Sasa, you may have a point but to think that the others cannot see the same point you are trying to put forward is absurd.Even a baby knows that when mum says “come” he /she has to lift the legs and walk towards mum. Who does not know the consequences of a weaker Kwacha? It is the same here, in Zimbabwe and South Africa to mention but a few.
You learned fellers are too theoretic in your approach on matters. One does not need all that education to perform to the expectations of the Zambians, at least the majority who want action rather than stories.

Ba Kubweka, these Professors we have in zambia are good for nothing.Professor Saasa was one of the Board Members of Zambia Railways at the time Professor Chirwa was CEO,the only thing we heard of Professor Saasa doing, was to start fighting his fellow Professor,Chirwa over allowances. The infor we had is that Professor Saasa and his fellow Board Members wantd to be getting sitting allowances over non planned/sanctioned meetings.Ala bamo ama Professors ba Zambia ma shinafye. How do u expect Hon Kambwili to respect the Professors views when He Kambwili has a Dossier on the Professors misconduct while he was at Zambia Railways.Open your eyes please.I personally used to respect Professor Oliver Saasa but once that scandal come out i stopped doing so.

Indeed Kambwili is a fool. leading a nation is not like managing your house. You can use commands to teach your children or create sanity in your home but with a nation it cant work because people are different. Kambwili I also wonder if you really schooled because you sound ignorant.

How many profs have we tried and failed this country? We are nor at school where we should believ that the prof does not go wrong. UNZA has alot of problems yet it is the den of profs. Why havent they solved those problem insteady of using traditional methods of work stopage and keeping results?

Kambwili is one of the most useless ministers zambia has ever had. It is sad to see a country with so many intellectuals rely on such trash as a minister. Its a shame on pf to hav such leadership.

Stop using words on which you have scanty understanding. Everytime someone uses the word ‘intellectual’ they remind me of UNZA freshers. That is the word they use mostly to describe themselves and it’s use wanes as they go towards bu Mafoursa, bumafifi, etc.
They begin to understand that intelectualism actually has more to do with using the brain, the intellect, than the book.
So, Kambwili may be a better one than them.
