KELVIN CHONGO, Lusaka
GOVERNMENT has awarded members of the Civil Servants and Allied Workers Union of Zambia (CSAWUZ) and the National Union of Public Service Workers (NUPSW) salary increments of between nine and 29 percent.
Government has also awarded three health sector unions salary increments of nine percent to the least paid employee while the highest has received a 29 percent rise for the year 2016.
Representative of CSAWUZ Davy Chiyobe who signed on behalf of the union said yesterday that Government and the unions have settled for a graded salary increment.
Mr Chiyobe said in the past civil servants were awarded increments across the board and that the union has now gone back to the system of awarding salaries according to individual employment grades.
He said the agreements also involve the introduction of a funeral scheme and adjustments to some distortions in the collective agreement.
Mr Chiyobe said the two unions would have pushed Government further for higher increments but is aware of the current economic challenges the employer is facing.
Health sector unions representative Tom Yungana said the Zambia Union of Nurses Organisation, Health Workers Union of Zambia and Zambia National Union of Health and Allied Workers have also been awarded minimum salary increments of nine percent and maximum of 28 percent.
And Public Service Management Division permanent secretary Velepi Mtonga, who is Government’s representative in the negotiations, said the two months negotiations were not easy but that Government demonstrated the spirit of give and take.
Dr Mtonga commended the unions for being the first to sign the collective agreements, which runs from January 1 to December 2016

If you are not a civil servant you cant appreciate the percentage increment based on grading. So let civil servants explain to us how they feel not you guys who are unemployed like me but busy exposing our ignorance on other peoples wages. Cant you see that even NEZ,JJB and Hello Haters are quiet on this one.

Can someone explain to me what this increment means where the least paid gets the lowest percentage and the highest paid gets a bigger percentage. In most private companies the opposite happens. People at the bottom are given a higher percentage than those at the top.

This makes a bit of sense because it is a complete departure from shamenda’s pro poor policy where a sweeper gets more than a learned fellow. That is what we call inconsistencies in policy and management.

The wage freeze was to be lifted before 31/12/2015 & time/resources were wasted to just announce that. Now is this the lifting of the wage freeze or the end of 2016 campaign strategy negotiations? On 18th someone doesn’t just need to fast/pray but also confess/repent.

Wats a 9percent increment wen da cost of living over the past two years has doubled? Prices for all essential commodities hav drastically increased. (Bread, cooking oil, mealie meal, sugar, relish) This shud not even b called an increment.
