Zambia: Independence And Individual Freedom
Dear Editor,
As Zambia celebrates 51 years of independence from Britain I am very sure that a lot will be politicized just like other events have been in the past. People will talk about how free we are politically and economically. 24th even up to 31st October, the days will be characterised with such.
Since the advent of social media everyone has become a politician, economic or relationship expert. I understand that these elements may be part of our daily lives. However I have come to know that all the above mentioned components have made us slaves in one way or another.
When we look at each and very aspect of live, politics, social or relationships you will agree with me that others have come to define who we are. This is mainly because we have been brought up to think that no man or woman is an island. We live for others and others live for us. In this regard others have taken advantage of a lot of situation to grow as individuals. Concurrently others have taken a stagnant or a passive stance.
I understand that we all have different backgrounds and situations. Nonetheless I believe that as individuals we ought to push for that independence. That independence of mind and soul. We ought to rekindle that zeal and self esteem that everyone has. Independence from colonial rule will only make sense if us as individuals who make up Zambia are free from elements like inferiority complex and things that put us second to others. I believe a modern day citizen who wants to be part of history of not only our country but also the world must seek the following
1. Independent and Individual growth
If your friends have moved on and you are still on the same spot then you have to reset your plan. As I said above we all have different situations and challenges but that should not be an excuse. If you want to achieve something in life you will do it. Maybe it is time to ask yourself critical questions like: Why is it that all my friends are doing well or growing and I am still on the same level? Why is it that my brothers and sisters are doing it and I am not despite us having the same chances? These are very important questions other wise nothing will come around in our lives. I understand everyone wants a free lunch from somewhere. But the questions is when are you going to buy your own lunch.
2. Independence and Discipline: Money Matters
Some time back I a wrote something which I posted on my official Facebook page about the issue of money and how having discipline on how we spend it can help us reach our individual goals. In this post which was published in/on selected print and online media I noted that if a person reach the payday without any money then such a person has a big problem with spending. A person who is getting at the end of a working month end should know how to save money. I know people who will ask for transport money just seven days after getting paid.
Here too one needs to ask themselves some questions. Do I have a spending problem? I mean you can’t just buy things because you can afford. What is the sense of affording to buy 20 pairs of shoes or drinking all your cash but you can’t afford to pay for your transport to work. You afford to change phones every month but you can’t afford to pay for your college or University. Be independent from “bad” financial decisions. You are always at your parents place to ask for cooking oil despite working for over four years. Friend you have a problem.
3. Independence and Social Media
I was reading some comments on one online post in my spare time and I came across a comment that really touched me. Jolly Picket(not real name) wrote:
“Guy what time do you work?I notice some people are always on social media 24/7 waiting for posts to comment on. Time is ticking along with ageing. Reflect on your life and see what you have achieved and what you haven’t. Foreigners are busy making cash and enriching themselves in our own country, here we are the owners of Zambia gossiping about politicians year in year out. Ndimwe mu bweza ziko pansi.(you are the ones who casing the country not to develop) Change for the better…”
There you go. I think I agree with Jolly. I have seen people who have been complaining about how hard life is. How the government is not doing anything and how they can’t find food, jobs or money for school. Just as Jolly has said these people are always logged on to social media and if you look at some comments they are done during working hours. For me this means if someone is a working class and they are working for either a private individual/organisation or government they are stealing time.
If one has finished secondary school and they have not gone to collage or they are not working yet they are on social media complaining and blaming others. These kind of people will forever be colonised in their minds. Free yourself from social media and show yourself what you can do. Use social media as a tool to lean and seek knowledge that can help you. Yes we can interact with friends but let’s balance things. Just do a rough calculation on the money you have spent and just imagine how far you would have gone with school or just saving your money.
4. Independence: Stop being a Cheerleader
There are people who are still on the same level of life while friends and people they don’t even know are succeeding. There are people who spend time cheering others or saying things like. That guy is very successful. Do you know that he just starting doing a diploma in Accounting despite coming from a humble family? That politician is a rich, do you know that he has shares in that company? Hey! Did you know that Jane just got married or Paul just bought a car?
Come on!! When are you going to cheer for yourself. When are you going to give praise to yourself. Be independent from just looking at others as successful. See yourself as a person who can do something for yourself and feel proud of it. It’s good to lean from other people’s successes but you don’t need to be a cheerleader.
5. Independence: Government is not a Babysitter
The colonial masters left a very deadly illness of always wanting to be spoon-fed. People are always blaming the government for everything they are lacking. This shouldn’t be the case. For me the
role of President Lungu and every other elected or appointed leader is that of a facilitator. They try to put in place elements which help us. They build schools, universities, construct roads and make the economic environment at any level favourable. I think ours is to fill in the blanks.
The Always Demanding from the Government Syndrome(ADGOS) should come to an end. As future leaders we have to stop lazying around. Believe me if this is done even our minds, and actions will be independent.
Have a good and reflective independence anniversary. One Zambia-One Nation

Zambians were freed in 1964 only to be colonized and mistreated by fellow zambians. This has been happening and even worse under pf. The only way to sort this mess out is to clear the entire system and start afresh. In other words we need a revolution to change the status quo. We need the UPND to be voted in so that we see a new movement with able leadership and clean up of the dirty corrupt system we have under pf. We thank you and welcome you all to the upnd.

You have lost it. This day is not a farce and never has been a farce. If you know HH I am sure you know that is not what he has said on this day. Nobody in the leadership of the UPND thinks this day is a farce. That’s an insult to Zambians.

it is a farce under pf. What independence are we celebrating when 51 years after independence we are in darkness due to load shedding? our currency is one of the worst performing? our universities are closing regularly? budget deficit has reached alarming levels. I can go on all day.

This attitude of saying only UPND knows what is best is no better than that of the colonists who thought they had a right to rule us.

yes we are thankful to all those that were brave to go out and fight the colonialists but we are very much disappointed at those that are ruling this country and have brought about conditions worse than we have under colonial rule – NEZ (UPND chief strategist)

Independence day is a powerful reminder that if we had a welcoming and open mind ruling party that is willing to listen to opposition and take on constructive criticism then we might overcome obstacles in our path – NEZ (UPND chief strategist)

Happy dependency day zambia. Good article however the major bottle neck in zambia to citizen development is politicians/govt.For example if foreiner invests in zambia they are given a tax holiday which can’t be given to zambians.

….If upnd held a party national convention today and gbm challenges HH, Gbm would win because he has support in 6 provinces and can still mobilise the 7th province. Reason being that equal numbers of participants from each province are sent to the convention. Any party strategist should know this trick. Not akamuntu ati am party strategist but clueless on such issues. Go gbm president for upnd 2016.

Its true that government should act as a facilitator, but de government is not only failing to facilitate but fails even to inspire citizens to hope for better days ahead,on all their faces the only thing visible is their fear to lose elections next year.Even the president himself only show life in him when he talks about next election! other issues,he seem to to waiting for nature to decide

one of the reasons why people remain at the same level in life having expensive habits such as womanising and beer drinking.since majority of youths drink beer more than water, joe should know that, his beloved government,by reducing duty on beer has managed to make sure that majority of the young pipo remain economic slaves, thanks to pf,now they drink more beer than their oxgen intake! more beer, more drunkards, less productivity.

Independence Day doesn’t make sense no more. People need to celebrate with a reason and pride in their hearts. It’s like a slave celebrating leaving his master Mr Churchill as he’s taken by another new master Mr. Jameson bottom line he’s still a slave. Actually as Zambians we need to be ashamed on this day why are we in poverty, economic mess, mostly unemployed, yet we were “reberated” 51 yrs ago?
