Zuma Freezes Tuition Fees Amid Student Protests

South African President Jacob Zuma has ruled out any increases in university tuition fees for next year after more than a week of protests by students.

They have been the biggest student protests to hit the country since apartheid ended in 1994.

The students had rejected an earlier government offer to cap increases at 6%, down from the 10% to 12% proposed by the management of universities.

Mr Zuma announced the move as students gathered by his office in the capital.

Before he spoke in a TV address, police had been using stun grenades and water cannon to stop a group of students breaking into the Union Buildings, the seat of government in Pretoria.

One thing I like about south Africans is that they hold their government accountable. I think after their apatheid struggles they do understand the importance of freedom. Zambians on other hand have gotten used to poverty under pf and just put up with it. Wake up my brothers and sisters.

you sound very upset and I do not blame you. Many zambians feel the same due to the conditions they find themselves under the useless pf. You go on to state that I should give you a chance to comment. Do you realise that you can comment even after or before I have commented?

Never knew Zuma had so much for education, am not his fan but he seems to have respect for students, unlike his Zambian counterpart whose police force descended on harmless poor cbu students on a day we supposed to celebrate our freedom , toasting away with his royal guest at house state.

Jag some clever chaps on this site are now praising Zuma but if the same happened in Zambia then it would ve been inconsistencies. Price were just unfair for the poor guys cos just imagine from Red registration fees to R20000. The rand isn’t an easy money to find and moreover it has value.

mj banda how is joburg? Mune the soapy superstar zuma has made a bond decision over the students tuitions fees impasse, and what is your president doing about the simple cbu impasse, since his minister has failed to sort it out? Let’s pray that’s the first thing he will deal with when he visits kitwe this week, kikikiki mwaiche wandi ulensenkesha you and your little buddies have been telling us the kwacha’s poor performance is due to a global economic crisis, and all countries are affected bit here you are talking about the south Africa rand having value, so you PFool cadres know that the kwacha has been rendered useless by your PFool cadres now you even praising the Rand.
