Kanene Pleads NOT Guilty To Assault
CAROLINE KALOMBE, Lusaka
MUSICIAN Clifford Dimba, popularly known as ‘General Kanene’, has pleaded not guilty in the Lusaka Magistrate’s Court to assaulting a 32-year-old woman of Chawama township.
The case came up before principal magistrate Kenneth Mulife for plea and Dimba told the court that he understood the charge against him but denied committing the offence.
Kanene has asked the court to grant him bail pending trial, but the State objected to the application saying he would interfere with witnesses.
He said he is a well-known musician in the country and his whereabouts are known.
The State argued that they have evidence that Dimba was interfering with witnesses and that it would adduce that evidence later to the court.
“He may compromise the witnesses. People have been following the complainant,” the State prosecutor said.
But Kanene argued through his lawyer, Nicholas Chanda, that the State was merely making assumptions and that it should have brought that evidence before the court.
Mr Chanda said the State’s intention was to keep his client incarcerated.
Mr Mulife said he would allow the State to prove its allegations, which he said were serious, and reserved the granting of bail until the issue of interference was dealt with.
“Considering the State’s allegation is serious and must be proved, it is in the interest of justice to prove the allegations,” Mr Mulife said.
The case will come up on November 10, this year, for continued hearing.
