More Grade 7 Pupils Pass

A TOTAL of 310,230 out of 344,516 pupils who sat for grade seven examinations this year have been selected to grade eight, representing a national progression rate of 90.05 percent, compared to 90.02 percent last year.
Minister of General Education John Phiri said of those selected, 155,878 were boys and 154,352 were girls bringing a progression rate to 88.35 percent for boys and 91.83 percent for girls.
“For the 34,286 candidates who were not selected into the regular classes, I direct the directorate of distance education and open education to ensure that the unselected candidates are absorbed into the open learning classes and schools for continuity,” he said.
He said that a total of 206,289 candidates have obtained division one, two and three certificates representing 59.9 percent of the total candidates that sat for examinations.
Dr Phiri said a total of 138,227 candidates obtained division 4 certificates, representing 40.1 percent.
“Overall, the trend performance is showing improvement in the proportions of those obtaining division 2 and 3,” he said.
He said that the national mean score was 611.26 this year as compared to 611.12 in 2014.
Dr Phiri said that Lusaka (631.39), Copperbelt (619.11) Eastern (614.76) and Southern (611.40) out of the 10 provinces scored above the national mean.
Muchinga Province was the least performing province with a mean score of 594.40.
He said a total of 383,676 candidates entered for the examinations this year as compared to 367,967 in 2014.
Dr Phiri said the Ministry has been recording an annual increase in candidature of 4 percent since 2013 due to the infrastructure development programme which has resulted in expanded classroom spaces.
“Despite the steady growth of candidature, the rate of absenteeism may affect the gains made.
“The cause for absenteeism for girls is early marriage and teenage pregnancies, while for boys is engagement in household income-generating activities such as cattle herding,’’ Dr Phiri said.
A total of 39,160 candidates were absent and of these 20,016 were girls and 19,144 boys.
Dr Phiri said that the Government will remain committed to improving access to quality education by recruiting more teachers, improving salaries and conditions and expansion of school infrastructure.

I miss Kaunda Government. In those days, a pupil getting over 800 marks was a marvel & he/she would be taken to schools like Mpelembe right away. Most of the schools were government owned or Trustees e.g. nder the mine. Nowadays, there is lickage, spoon feeding @ the private schools for advertising purposes, kaili ni business. Ever since Chiluba took over, it has been disasdter, fyonse ni gong’a.

When there’s nothing negative to say about a positive thing all certain fools can do is post trash like “Microwaved results”.

Get real, at times silence is gold. Being in opposition doesn’t mean you have always to oppose and be negative.

    • zhyono   December 4, 2015 at 10:47 am

@cool cat nimbwa ishi, muntu wandi bushe bantu aba,you know what one thing they fail to realise is that their ancestors sold this nation to the whites because of selfish gains Harry mwaanga nkumbula from that very moment God so that they will never rule this nation no matter how had they try bakala cula ba mikongo

Congratulations to these young boys and girls who have made it!
Pity is that you will soon be learning about Pythagorus theorem, which you will never be able to use in real life as you are likely to join the current largest sector in Zambia’s economy – cadreship.

  15. Ndaje Kakhs   December 4, 2015 at 1:05 pm

jjb & Co – Your main ammunition is to see Zambia fail so that you can be able to win the 2016. You are being unpatriotic. For me if HH won I would give him all the support just like I did with Levy even though I never liked the man.

    • CoolCat   December 4, 2015 at 1:26 pm

That JJB is just a bitter fool who can’t reason objectively. He thinks by being negative it makes him smart. Have you ever seen him say something positive about the current government? Have you ever seen him say negative about his party. As far as this fool is concerned, HH is infallible and H.E President Lungu is the devil incarnate.

      • Ndaje Kakhs   December 4, 2015 at 2:04 pm

No! I bet he will come up with an idea that those who passed are PF cadres ‘children.

        • Judge Joe Bidden   December 4, 2015 at 2:22 pm

Kikiki 😀 Ok something positive, Edgar has a sweet daughter I wished i played akamfisolo with as kids!

          • Judge Joe Bidden   December 4, 2015 at 2:27 pm

I would have wired her! (Now something negative, I cant imagine having Edgar as my in-law! eish!)

    • Judge Joe Bidden   December 4, 2015 at 2:35 pm

I am a very positive and focused, and give credit where its due for example I am one person whos 107% support of dual citizenship becoz I would have long changed but it bothered me why I should shed off my natural birth right as a Zambian – Edgar Chagwa my beloved president kudos for that!

      • Onyx power @vampiros   December 4, 2015 at 3:07 pm

When are GCE examinations marking team going to be paid their meagre Marking Allowance for August September marking session? Is ECZ ignoring them?

  24. longman   December 6, 2015 at 11:53 am

our education standards have gone down. while the progresion rate keeps improving, the number of pupils who enter grade 8 without knowing how to write even their own names keeps increasing. let us work hard to change this shameful scenario.
