SECRETARY to the Cabinet Dr Roland Msiska says he is disappointed that adults at his office don’t keep toilets clean.
Speaking to journalists at Cabinet Office on Thursday ahead of the Keep Zambia Clean campaign today, Dr Msiska said whenever he passed through the office over weekends, he failed to believe what he finds in toilets.
“Even here, I tell my colleagues to keep these walls clean. I come here during weekends and what I find, I don’t believe that adults can do this. I get into public toilets and what I find, I fail to believe that adults can do this. We don’t need money to keep our surroundings clean…,” Dr Msiska said.
He said keeping cities clean did not require money but a change of attitude.
Dr Msiska said it was not uncharacteristic to see Zambians travelling from Botswana or Namibia throwing bottles and plastics out of moving vehicles.
“This issue is not an issue of capacity; it is an issue of just our own attitudes, vis-à-vis the need to keep our facilities clean. I myself with permanent secretaries are going to be going round our various facilities to make sure that we can do the cleaning. We all have a responsibility as Zambians to try to the best of our abilities to keep our surroundings clean. We don’t need much money,” he said.
Dr Msiska said Zambia was capable of keeping its cities clean, just like Singapore and Japan.

It is often said, “Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference”. The greatest day in your life and mine is when we take total responsibility for our attitudes. That’s the day we truly grow up.

If an employee is failing to keep one room called the toilet clean find someone else. Surely do we need the PS to tell us that things are not OK? There must be supervisors to whom the janitors report to and that is the one to target. Once in a while, the bosses must take a walk to the general toilets and see for themselves the status in which they are and correct if need be. Their word is just as good as doing it.

The problem is not the janor’s only, it’s also the ministers who use those toilets. Everyone needs to change their attitude.

Quite filthy, some Zambians. There’s strong need for all countrymen/women to cultivate good sanitary tendencies and practices, at personal level as well as at the environmental level. There are people in some communities who have no hesitation in turning their backyards, even some footpaths, into shitting grounds. Shamefully pathetic.

If cabinet toilets can be that filth, wat more of toilets @ KMB or kamwala ? Our curriculum shud include hygene as a subject on its own, even churches shud teach hygene . It must be consistently taught not just a oneoff topic.

I agree good hygiene practices must be taught in schools and were possible paid for The other problem is lack of sanitary bins for ladies in public toilets to avoid toilet blockages from sanitary pads.
