Republican President Edgar Lungu has apologised to the families of Kitwe’s Mufuchani area whose houses were demolished by the Kitwe City Council on Tuesday.
The President sent his apologizes through Copperbelt Minister Mwenya Musenge who visited the affected families on Wednesday.
Addressing the residents Mr Musenge said the President was asking for their forgiveness as no one was authorized to demolish houses without proper procedure.
“The President is asking for forgiveness on what has happened here, on one is authorized to beat up people. When we have challenges it is important to engage one another, it is good that we seat and talk about our challenges. Even when moving people there are procedures,” Mr Musenge said.
The President has further directed the local authority to accommodate the affected families and give them offer letters to new plots.
“The luck you have it that when we finish talking about what has happened here, we want by tomorrow everyone who is affected should be given offer letters to a new location where you will have your own land and no one will come to harass you,” he said.
Last week Local government Minister Stephen Kampyongo ordered for the demolishing of houses built on allegedly illegal land.

The Minister is following the law whereas the President is playing politics. ECL might have even been aware that those houses were going to be destroyed. That’s politics for you.

Kampyongo how can you feel if people demolish houses in Shiwangandu or Kwa Mwilwa. It was a dumb move to demolish the houses in Kitwe minister. Nkani ya lula. I see you going into diplomatic service ….maybe high commissioner in Somalia based in Mogadishu near the alshabab strong hold.

The problem is these Council workers are greedy, They want all the land to themselves all the time. They are so greedy they will give themselves 5 plots each.
I have even vowed never to apply for a plot from any council because the idiots have no shame. last time I applied for a plot in Luanshya for the land at the Luanshya turnoff, I got a rude shock when I saw the list of the people who got the plots. It was councillors MPs and council workers and even politicians and their wives including Kaseba Sata. Go and check with that Council now.
They advertised and we paid non refundable fees, large amounts when the land was already allocated. I was called for interviews and had to travel from Lusaka but got fako….!
My bank account was ok and I showed evidence that I had built another 2 houses from scratch within Luanshya from the plot I bought at a commercial price.
The land issue is rotten to the core.
What has appened to the land audit that was conducted in 2012? So they just identified open land and shared.
Shame!

What a disorganized Zambian Govnt we have. MR ECL is clueless on everything mwebantu. Where are we going with this PF Govt. Ever forward and Reverse, forward reverse, forward reverse as if they are dancers. How can the kwacha gain value with such a week president. Anybody who knows that the president is the biggest asset in any country should raise their hands? and I wish show the liability president of his country called Zambia.

its so sad to hear such. i once saw this in lusaka near the independence or should i say behind, ppl on such lands should be given notices and also be given land on where they will move. a lot of folks have stayed in those areas for many years. they have put in all there hard earnings in the structures demolished.

January 14, 2016 at 6:49 pm
Demolition was ok. Some of us work hard to buy plots then a silly upnd chap wants to justify illegality. Let them go get land at hhs farm or build illegally on his farm. I support the demolition. Upnd can’t justify illegal land allocation.

I know that he can’t act without the approval of the head of state..kapyongo can’t just wake up and say we are demolishing houses here or there.. If kapyongo acted in isolation, let he be fired NOW..otherwise,I smell a rat here..

A MINISTER CAN’T MAKE A TRIP WITHOUT HIS BOSS’S BLESSINGS. ECL KNEW AND BLESSED ALL THIS. HE IN ANOTHER WORDS SENT HIM TO DEMOLISH LEAVING AN ALREADY PREPARED APOLOGY WITH HIS BOSS.

I learnt that the hard way.Applying for land or responding to adverts for land allocation in Zambia merely makes you help the 1diots to seemingly hide their corruption as they will be able to portray an image of transparency at your cost-remember you have to pay non refundable fees.By the time they are advertising they would have already shared the land.
