Editor,
I wish to express my displeasure at how some police officers have exposed their incompetence in discharging their duties. For quite some time now, the police have been brutalising people. Much as the victims of police brutality could have been perpetrators of confusion, human torture needs to be condemned and therefore curtailed. Within last month, it was first UNZA and CBU students who were brutalised over their meal allowances, then Kabangwe residents over “cadres allocating land” and not more than four days ago, it was UPND supporters trying to show solidarity with their party vice-president who were ruthlessly brutalised by police officers. Police brutality tells us that police officers themselves do not understand the law or if they do, they do not have regard for it. One would wonder whether police officers have as well joined the divisions among political parties. What is more heartbreaking is that some of these victims have a genuine plight.
The seemingly simplest but challenging question that I have been grappling with is whether there is anything being done to curb police brutality. If so, to what extent? We know that the police have reluctantly dealt with such matters but we also do not wish to say the Law Association of Zambia has gone to sleep. I am appealing to all well-wishers to come on board to fight this tragedy that is now on the increase.
Zambia, as a constitutional state, bows down to the notion of “constitutional supremacy” which also gives birth to the “rule of law” and not of officers. This means in Zambia, no single person is above the law, and that all persons are subject to the law. Unless human rights cease to exist, there is not any, or will there be and never shall be, a justification of any sort for human torture. Our forefathers have pledged One Zambia, One nation. Can’t we uphold that?

You have just confirmed in your letter that we have a functioning Police. There are channels of airing views however much aggrieved you may be. That which accords the citizens of Zambia a guaranteed harmony. I like the Police; They will ask you about three times to disperse in the name of the President. If you refuse to heed my friend you cease to be a complainant but a combatant. Its natural law anywhere on the globe including in heaven. Lucifer and his gang had to be cast out of the heavens with disfigured faces. From the most beautiful angel to some creature that would resemble GBM in police cells.
Theoretically that is true. However practically and in reality under pf the police who are controlled by the pf are indeed above the law. However we do not blame.you police men because you are only just trying to keep your jobs and feed your families under difficult situation. We trust that in august you will make wise decision to vote for upnd who will ensure independence of police
Pls people only use the first part of NEZ comment, put it into practice kkkkkkk, if UPND form govt, malitia training will end, anyone can insult a president, kuti? Ku Cowthern kkkkkkkk
Only GBM and HH are above the law right NEZ?
We strongly condemn police brutality,Zambians should be allowed to exercise their freedom of association and expression. Lets not trample on people’s rights. To you police men and women please be professional when doing your Job
There is a lot of corruption in Police Service especially traffic officers. If you compare the performance of Police service in KK regime and these time there is a big gap. Konswe ngakokola mu nganda alasha na TV. In KK’s era police officers never used to over stay in one town or province that’s why corruption was not like these times. PF gvt start transferring these officers you will see a change. Those who will refuse let them resign
Mr.k,i wonder how old you are. I for one, will never forget how brutal kk was.we had police brutality, commando brutality, kanfinsa brutality, red barret brutality, paramilitary brutality, mention it.kk was the worst human rights violator zambia has ever had after colonialism. Please follow the normal procedure if you are aggrieved. Police are trained to listen, give orders, slap, kick, shoot etc just to enforce law and order.
These guys and their counterparts from deadNBC, and those two newspapers they will need retraining, we can’t take such appalling thuggish mentality into the new political dispersion.
watmo Longwe(NGOs) and Rogan(UN) representatives hav seen that there is police brutality, and i noticed wen each mentiond police brutality the camera showed lungu, on each mention he shaked head and whispered to the person sitting next to him. he knows and every1 knows including u fools cadres of him that he is the one causing this.
People Of Little Idea Can Enter=(POLICE) mixture employment of party cadres ; they follow orders without thinking

It is high time as Zambians, to massively vote wisely on the 11th of August 2016. Let us not vote on tribal basis but let us vote based on leadership quality the aspiring candidate possesses. If we will vote on tribal basis then we will not improve as a country.Let us reason Zambians posterity will judge us wrongly for the bad decision we will make come Aug 11th 2016. We are seeing what is happening in our country Zambia, how unstable our economy has become. Anyway think about it.
