UPND Accused Of Bulk-Buying Mealie-Meal

SUSPECTED United Party for National Development (UPND) members are buying mealie-meal in bulk in Lusaka to ostensibly cause a shortage.
Some residents of Lusaka’s Chawama Township have told the Sunday Mail that on Thursday the mealie meal was being bought from various outlets and loaded in trucks and driven away.
Some concerned residents are said to have reported the suspicious bulk-buying of the mealie-meal to Chawama Police while others got into a verbal confrontation with the buyers, whom they accused of causing an artificial shortage.
“There was a woman who belongs to the UPND. She came to one of the shops and told the owner that she wanted to buy all the mealie-meal. She was challenged about where she was taking the mealie-meal but she said what was wrong with buying everything.
“These people just want to cause a shortage and make Government unpopular, so the matter was reported to Chawama Police. Two trucks were impounded,” she said.
Another resident said there were similar bulk purchases of mealie-meal in neighbouring townships of Misisi and Kuku.
“As we speak, there is no mealie-meal in Misisi and Kuku,” she said.
When contacted for a comment, Police spokesperson Charity Munganga Chanda said the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) was handling the case and that the police were not involved in the operation.
But DEC public relations officer Theresa Katongo said the commission is not aware of any operation that was carried out in Chawama or any arrests made to that effect.
Ms Katongo said the commission’s team from the inspectorate department was in fact nowhere in or near Chawama or the surrounding areas.
“That should be the issue of the police. We do not even detain people; if we do detain, suspects are handed over to the police. Anyway, I will continue asking my colleagues to find out what is really going on,” she said.
However, sources confirmed that there was a truck laden with mealie-meal bags parked at Chawama Police Station after the operation.
The source could not confirm whether or not people were arrested.
UPND spokesperson Charles Kakoma said his members should not be implicated in the shortage of mealie-meal in Chawama township.
“None of our members is buying mealie-meal in bulk to create an artificial shortage of the commodity. The people buying in bulk are just Zambian citizens with plans of reselling at a higher price.
“There is a shortage of mealie-meal in Chawama and that is the bigger picture which should be tackled by Government,” he said.

Always snitching on your neighbors to get favors from government officials.

The upnd has formed a cartel and are buying mealie meal in bulk for export to create artificial shortages and spike the price. Thus they hope to create discontent and anarchy in the country. HH thinks he can ascend to power through such petty trickery but alas that wont win him any votes!Police should seriously investigate such schemes because its tantamount to blackmailing the country.

Kiki kikikikiki 😂 a sign of failure is blaming everyone else but yourself for failures affecting the country. Upnd must be very powerful to have so much control over things in zambia or it means that the pf are so weak they have no control of the country . Anywya we will give them a much needed break in august

Is Africa mature enough to cope with challenges of Democracy? Could it be that we are just overzealous and do not even understand what democracy really costs? There is a reason why we have violence to day. The Nation was not adequately sensitised about the attributes of democracy before the change to democracy in 1991. And where there is a problem there is an opportunity. While we fight to quench violence, others have found opportunity for gain.

Every nomal person should wonder why the country can have shortage and high meal meal price when FRA has enough maize. HH has brought more misery to this country. He sold our companies and now wants to buy our country. Zambians lets get united and punish these criminals in any way possible.

  14. Hello Haters

    March 14, 2016 at 9:55 am

@assange this HH is powerful, does it mean FRA has to get instructions from him to off load maize on the market.

@alinuila, thanks for your wisdom my man but let me add by saying,”its soo easy to curb violence in a country like zambia, zambians are too poor to go for war because the very next day they will need money for food, fees, rentals etc”. The violence you see in zambia is furned and tollerated by government in power because it favours them. If Lungu firmly says there should be no violence, who can go against that, alinamachende yakulu bwanji? Its just a deliberate gymic by party in power because they believe in politics of intimidation. Mwanawasa my best presido ever, termmed the thugs created by Sata and Chiluba in mmd. If he had his own cadres face the law,how could the opposition be violent? Is Miles Sampa’s followers violent for his offices to get burnt in Mpika 2 days ago? A violent weak government always intimidates a stronger opponent, only fools and small minds believe its possible for opposition to be violent.

and so to your understanding the government in power is the one buying the same maiden so that their should b a shortage and hence create a violent environment ….does that make sense to you..look up it says a known upnd official was spotted arguing with a ship owner why she wanted to buy all the meali meal..her answer was straight forward she said is it a crime…that my friend is where the argument is based ..crying over what the government isn’t doing is by far not the topic ..talking of our government being a government of thugs, where we there when gbm was training cadres who were found with machetes and bullets..save that drama for tomorrow topics

  22. humphrey

    March 14, 2016 at 12:20 pm

According to the market forces, millers are expected to offload more of the product on the market since they are able to sell more in a blink of an eye…But why? Government has also opened milling companies, why are they unable to offload more on the market? When demand increases, supliers respond positively by supplying more unless there is nothing in stock as well as no raw materials… The PF is always looking for someone to blame… next it will be fuel, ati GBM nashita yonse to cause an artificial shortage.

all tribalist are dogs to me,tonga or bemba. However the truth is that some tongas have issues with bemba because of bemba superiority complex, otherwise tongas accept and respect all other tribes, thats why you find on average a tonger speaks more than 5 local langues including bemba,on the other hand a bemba speaks only bemba. Bembas only stand easters and its obvious because bembas have easterners in their pants, let the truth be told. Us bembas must learn to respect other tribes.

Pre mafacie evidence look at the man carrying tons of mealie meal. He is surely not from our party UPND. I know him he is staunch PF. So my question who is stealing from who. PF has failed and as such the very PF are bulk buying to go and repackage and sell tu ma pamela for the sake of survival. Do not involve FORWARD thinkers in issues of pragmatic failures. The economy has failed simple solution is August 11 2016. Bring in the right team and all will be well.

It does not make sense upnd buying so much maize meal and do what with it, these are just individuals buying for their businesses, sensing the the scarcity of the commodity. Some one just trying to gunner for political point making upnd the scapegoat of pf failures. Let the millers supply more stock, we were assured of sufficient stock after all, who is able to buy maize meal aimed at feeding 13 million people?
