EDGAR Lungu is such a childish President that if he is not removed from power, he will turn State House into a play park, says UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema.
And Hichilema says he will not draw a salary once elected president because it will be time for him to sacrifice and serve the country where he has invested.
Meanwhile, confusion ensued in Katete on Wednesday afternoon after police officers attempted to prevent Hichilema from meeting UPND members who had gathered to greet him on the Katete-Chipata road.
President Lungu on Thursday shocked spectators, as well as his security personnel, during the handover ceremony of newly built police houses in Chelstone after he started swinging on free-standing monkey bars.
After officially handing over the houses, President Lungu was taken round for an inspection, and after seeing a children’s play park, the Head of State could not resist the temptation of trying out a few stunts. After sampling the kids plastic castle, the President went on the free-standing monkey bars and as he swung from one end to the other, his T-shirt became untucked, exposing his black boxers.
This shocked several spectators, including his security detail.
“Nga ifi finshi balecita nabena ba boss, nga bapona (What is this that the President is doing? What if he falls?) This is what the media enjoys. Now look at that, people can even see his stomach and the boxers are showing, yaba!” a protocol officer was heard complaining.
In an interview yesterday, Hichilema said he could not believe his eyes when he saw a video clip of President Lungu swinging on the monkey bars during an official event.
“You see, the childish behaviour of Edgar Lungu intrigues everybody in this country, but it seems we haven’t seen his full character yet. Yesterday I saw a video of this guy in his safari suit, swinging on poles like a 12-year-old boy at kindergarten. I couldn’t believe that this guy was actually Edgar Lungu swinging, using the occasion to handover police houses, to play,” Hichilema said.
“I was shocked. This President is playing, enjoying himself on a swing instead of telling the police what his government is doing to ensure that their salaries are paid on time. instead of explaining to these hungry police officers when his government was going to give them salary increments also.”
He said President Lungu could not wait to give himself a salary increment because he was eager to start buying materials for his retirement play park. “No wonder he has greedily increased his salary at a time when everyone else in the country is rationing nsima, so that he can have enough money to buy a jumping castle for his retirement after August. He seems excited to buy everything that he will need for a play park where he will spend time swinging, drinking and gambling,” Hichilema said. “So we are asking the Zambian people to do this playing President a big favour by not delaying his exit from State House, because if you keep him longer at State House, he will turn that place into a play park. He will bring a gambling machine into State House because soon, he will get tired of sneaking out of State House to go out partying.” And Hichilema said he would not need a salary.
“What we are saying is that, we now need to focus on helping Zambians to live decent lives. Hakainde will not need a salary because he is not going in government to eat better, but to serve and also to save resources. Hichilema will not make unneccessary trips at the expense of the taxpayer, to go and play like President Edgar Lungu is doing. Hakainde is aware of the huge cost that is involved to move a Head of State and we don’t need to travel to places where a minister can easily get the job done,” Hichilema said.
“So for us, the motivation is to change the lives of the Zambian people, especially in the rural areas, so that they can feel human and part of the governance system. It will be an opportunity for us to serve the good people of Zambia in a country where there is great potential for local investment.” Meanwhile, Hichilema told his supporters in Katete that they should wake up early to give Lungu a farewell vote on August 11, without leaving chance for an election rerun.
“Pa 11 August, mukatenge banja yonse kuyenda mukuvota, tifuna kumukwapula maningi mu first round, sitifuna second round because azayamba kupaya banthu mwaona kale imwe violence ya Lungu and his PF. (On 11 August, get your families and go and vote. We want to whip him in the first round, we don’t want second round because he can start killing people, you have already seen Lungu’s violence and his PF),” he said.
Earlier, there was confusion when police officers tried to stop Hichilema from addressing supporters who turned up in large numbers to greet and him. After Hichilema arrived from Chipata around 14:00 hours, Sinda member of parliament Levy Ngoma invited the UPND supporters to meet and interact with Hichilema. But police officers told Hichilema that he could not address the people outside.
“My brother, my brother, do you people want war? You are talking war, there is no violence here; you can’t keep on behaving like this! There is no violence here, what’s your problem?”
Hichilema rebuked one of the police officers. Later, it was agreed that Hichilema speaks to the party officials at a lodge that was near Katete Mosque on Chipata road where 10 councillors vowed to support him.
