Deputy Minister Storms Bank Over Employee’s Facebook Comment
LOCAL government and housing deputy minister Dawson Kafwaya on Thursday afternoon stormed First National Bank, Mukuba Mall branch, to fish out an employee called Briven Simaundu, whom he accused of insulting him on Facebook.
And Copperbelt Province police commissioner Charity Katanga says Simaundu is under investigations in connection with a corruption story published by Zambian Watchdog on Facebook where the bank employee commented that “the idiot must be caged”.
According to eyewitnesses, Kafwaya entered the bank fuming and almost beat up Simaundu, a cashier, in full view of other employees, clients and bank security.
“It was very strange to see a deputy minister behaving in the manner he did. He just entered the bank, and there were some people there, and started shouting at his friend. He made a lot of noise and business was grounded to a stop. Everyone there was just watching,” one of the witnesses said.
When contacted, Simaundu confirmed that Kafwaya went to threaten him over a Facebook comment he made over a story which appeared on Zambia Watchdog about his alleged abuse of authority.
“Yes, he came to threaten me over a social media comment I made. He sent some police officers to arrest me but they did not find me. I actually got a call-out because when they came, I had gone for lunch and by the time I was coming back I found they had left and gave a notice to my bosses to say I should report to the police as soon as I was in receipt of the notice,” Simaundu said.
“When he called me, I told him that I was working and that I could not make it to the police station. I told him the best was for me to go there after knocking off. But after I knocked off, I made some consultations to which people told me not to go there on Thursday because I was going to be locked up until the long weekend.”
He said Kafwaya told him that he had insulted him and that he was going to deal with him.
“This has to do with a story on Watchdog where they had detailed his alleged corruption activities. The story stated that he used to get money from filling stations and diverting the funds to the flats he is building and I made a comment to that effect. I am shocked that he decided to come for me just because I am his old personal friend. I know him, we were together at CBU. He vented his anger on me just because he knows me,” Simaundu said.
When contacted for a comment, Kafwaya cut the line just after this reporter asked the question, and later sent a text message saying he was in a meeting.
Meanwhile, Katanga confirmed that Kafwaya had reported Simaundu to the Police over a Facebook comment. “The issue is that there was a complaint from the deputy minister honourable Dawson Kafwaya of Lusaka who complained against Briven Simaundu, a cashier at FNB Mukuba Mall where he alleged that he was insulted on Facebook, social media.
He said he has been insulting him, so he reported him since they knew each other from CBU. He reported the case at anti-robbery squad and a call-out was issued to Briven to find out about the same case. That is where it is as at now,” Katanga said.
Asked why police was following up on a Facebook comment, Katanga said: “I don’t know what insults, maybe that is what they want to establish. He is saying he is being insulted on social media. We will get more details on Tuesday.”

So throughout the bible there’s a lot pacifism being taught, turn the other cheek, (you all know.) But there’s also a lot of violence that’s shown as righteous, holy, and justified. David, Jesus flipping tables, the thumb of God coming down and smiting Sodom and Gomorrah, Samson taking up the jawbone of an a$s, etc. So when is okay to be violent and not turn the other cheek? Now, even personal grudges are public spectacles. Kafwaya may indeed be an idiot for making matters which he has reported to police to be personal. And to find grown men fighting over watchimbwa posts makes jth if them to be childish idiots.
