TWO housemaids in Lusaka have pleaded guilty to stealing clothes and alcohol worth K5,000 from former First Lady Christine Kaseba’s house.
Stella Michelo, 45, Eusibia Malambo, 27, both housemaids, and Zachariah Mulama, 24, a garden boy, all of Mtendere, are charged with theft by servant. Mulama has denied the charge.
On July 20 this year, Michelo, Malambo and Mulama allegedly stole seven tops, a dress and a pack of Heineken lager all worth K5,000 from Dr Kaseba’s house. When the matter came up yesterday before magistrate Nsunge Chanda, Michelo and Malambo admitted the charge. Michelo told the court that she stole three tops.
When asked why she stole the tops, Michelo said: “I don’t know what came into my mind.” And when further queried whether Dr Kaseba owed her anything or not, Michelo said the former First Lady did not. Malambo told the court that she stole four tops.
“So, you just told each other that ‘today we should steal’?” magistrate Chanda asked. In response, Malambo said she got the four tops when she and Michelo were packing clothes.
And when the charge was read out to him, Mulama also admitted the charge. “Yes, I got six bottles of Heineken,” he said.
Magistrate Chanda wondered why Mulama was saying he got instead of telling the court that he stole. Asked why he stole, Mulama said he was only asked by Michelo and Malambo to take the beer.
“While working outside, they called me and asked me to get some beer,” Mulama said as magistrate Chanda entered a ‘not guilty’ plea.
She also recorded guilty pleas for Michelo and Malambo. Magistrate Chanda set tomorrow as the day for written facts and sentencing for Michelo and Malambo.
Mulama, whose bail was extended, will appear in court on the same day for mention. Michelo and Malambo are in custody.
