DIGGERS 14 LUSAKA 5
‘MEN at Work’ Diggers on Saturday grabbed their third title of the season when they won the Mufulira Sevens title after outclassing ‘Powerhouse’ Lusaka at Mufulira Rugby Field.
Diggers, who also boast of the Nchanga 10s title as well as the American title, which they jointly won with Red Arrows early this year, had Benaya Mukwamba to thank for the victory.
Mukwamba placed two tries which he successfully converted to deny Lusaka the Mufulira 7s title that was until Saturday being held by reigning league champions Red Arrows.
Kelvin Kampandu scored one try for Lusaka, which he failed to convert.
To qualify to the final, Diggers edged Arrows 14-12 while Lusaka beat ‘Rampant Lions’ Nchanga 15-5.
Kabwela Mulenga and Benaya Mukwamba contributed one try each in the semi-finals, Mukwamba added two conversions while Arrows scored two tries through Nigel Chibwe and Edward Mumba.
Alex ‘Ucar’ Mwila could only manage to convert one out of two tries for Arrows.
Diggers received K3 million, Lusaka got K1.5 million with plate winners Ndola Wanderers, who edged Prisons 24-0, receiving K1 million.
Diggers coach Robertson Kang’ongwe lauded his players for putting up a good performance.
“Diggers should not be written off in winning this year’s league title. I would like to commend my players for winning the Mufulira 7s. Our focus now will be on defending this Saturday’s Luanshya Copper Mines 7s title,” Kang’ongwe said.
And Mufulira Rugby Club vice-chairman Chileshe Chileshe described the tournament as a success.
Chileshe said his executive committee was happy with the turnout and the good manner participating teams conducted themselves.
