MALAWI’s State Vice President, Joyce Banda is stuck in Zambia, fearing a possible arrest by the Government on tramped-up treason charges.
According to security officers at Lusaka’s Pamodzi hotel, Banda was expected to leave for Malawi but made an unceremonious return to the hotel midday, Tuesday. Banda arrived in the country on Sunday Opctober 23rd 2011 to attend the country’s 47th independence celebrationson Monday, October, 24 at the invitations of new Zambia’s leader, Michael Sata.
Sources familiar with the development disclosed the Malawian Vice President is now intending to seek aslyum in Zambia.
However, Zambian Government officials were not available for a comment.
Zambia has been entangled in a diplomatic row with Malawi after the Zambian president while the leader of the opposition was detained and declared a prohibited immigrant bundled into a vehicle and driven across the country to the Malawi-Zambia border in Chipata.
Sata did not attend the Heads of State and Government summit in Malawi from October 14 to 15, 2011, accusing the malawian leader, Bingu wa Mutharika of failing to apologize for unceremoniously deporting him in 2007 as leader of Zambia`s main opposition Patriotic Front.
According to the Nyasa Times of Malawi Plans to arrest Banda come fast on the heels of the Sata’s avoidance of Mutharika to be part of the Lusaka independence party.
Sata seems to have a soft spot towards the opposition political leaders in Malawi after he granted Malawi’s opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) a television broadcasting licence recently.

Atase, we dont need malawi at all. it has just made people like bene Tekere banda to come to zambia. so nabamama Banda should just go back to her country. we dont need more of their kind in zed. As for the broadcasting licence, what is wrong with it being granted; after all drc congo used to broadcast anti-Sata/PF messages in congo and parts of luapula province. good move HE MCS.

Please let us avoid friction with our neighbors at all costs if Mbingu does not want to apologies to Michael for what he did to him we can just leave things the way they are. That time our president was in opposition and you know the relationship that was between Mbingu and Rupia. Mbingu did not want to involve with the opposition leader for fear of staining the relationship with the serving president Rupia Banda. As for the Veep Madam Banda we thot she came to represent her country does it mean the president Mbingu was not aware of her trip to Zambia? We are happy his EMCS won the 20/09/11 elections let us settle and solve our problems in Zambia first.

IT IS JUST MISUNDERSTANDINGS AMONG MALAWANS. WE DON’T HAVE TO INVOLVE OURSELVES OVER THE TREASON CASE OF MISS BANDA. IF SHE CAME TO REPRESENT HER COUNTRY BUT WHY BEING SLAPPED WITH CHARGES. WE SENT OUR VICE PRESIDENT TO MALAWI AND DID NOT SLAP HIM WITH CHARGES. THIS IS THEIR PROBLEM AND LET US NOT INVOLVE OURSELVES.OUR PRESIDENT ONLY SENT HE COULD NOT GO TO MALAWI BECAUSE OF HOW HE WAS TREATED WHICH IS TRUE.LETS FACE THE REALITY.

The relationship between Zambia was destroyed by the MMD govt when Mutharika stopped MCS to meet Muluzi in Malawi. I hear even Mutharika made a “U” turn in the air when he heard that MCS has worn the elections. Who needs Malawi anyway? Madam Banda is free to stay in Zambia if seh fears for her life and even the same Mutharika stayed in Zambia when his life was at risk. Whys should he trea hsi VP like a cadre?

The problem in malawi has got nothing to do with MCS or any zambian,Bingu wants to silence JB because at the moment the guy is very unpopular in his country and JB been an oppositon leader as well as his veep Bingu thinks she working against him and has contributed to his downfall now hes trying by all means to bring that lady down and put Peter(his brother)as a presidential candidate in 2014.That is not the first time she has been threatened. The thing is Bingu has lost track.

Why have these two people BINGU and SATA dragged the two nations into their personal private matters?
Especially, Mr SATA – why drag Zambia into personal, private issues that happened way before he even became head od sate?

She can be MCS’s girl friend or many wives after all they are both good looking.Just remembered, the old man jumped on the populistic band wagon promoting gay rights in exchange for western financial favours for the PF.A post in the government or Sata marrying her will save the nation the hussle of feeding her and accomodating her at tax payers expense all she came at his controvetial invitation.
People are now more interested in having more money in their pockets as promised, water coming through from their taps,a sewerage system that cuts across all the towns not some areas, quality health care at the point of need not dependant on how much money one has in their bank accounts or status in society. These endless problems are not going be solved by wrong decisions or emotional decisions.
On the other side of things, it is sad that this goverment through Nkandu Luo wants all pubs to have water and flushing toilets when they have not provided the means of doing so.It makes more sense if government can expand our sewerage and water supply systems across the nation before giving unachievable deadlines to pub landlords who need to earn their living under very difficult circumstances.
There is plenty of water and land such that there is no reason why it cannot be done.It is unimaginable however that most of the taps are dry in our and no one has ever thought about doing anything about it.Improving our water and sewage system is going to creat more jobs as well as improve the lives of people who have been living without water for a long time.
Blaming MMD or offending neighbouring nations is not the answer that will solve this level of poverty in our nation.Get down to some serious business of leading the nation so that people can see what you are capable of doing in 90 days.

@ dora chsusu
We are all zambians and are one family, one blood lets not let our emotions and political affiliations divide us, at the end of the day we all want jobs, resources and decent wages and livelihoods that are befitting and pari pasu with the asserted economic boom whether pf or mmd.
@ iceberg
you should learn to treat elders with respect, calling HE MCS mancho man is not a good thing, no matter what he does he is our president. when he does wrong lets help him by giving him constructive and pragmatic criticism not insults or arrogance it will not take us anywhere.
Now coming to the issue at hand:
Over the weekend i warned everyone that the issue of malawi must be treated carefully, first of all i don’t agree with you my colleagues who say malawi is useless, when you are a landlocked country latter on part of the global village everyone is a factor.
Classic example jst last week HE MCS sent KK to angola to apologise, when we misbehaved during the MMD Chiluba period by supporting savimbi am sure we dint envisage that we will need crude oil from angola one day, did we? the same way today mutharika deported sata not knowing that one day he will rule and today MCS is president of zambia. So as zambia we shouldn’t fall in the same trap, mutharika must apologise period if he fails leave him posterity will judge him, Sata being president of Zambia is punishment enough for mutharika.
as for the vice president giving her asylum is not a good idea, we shouldn’t get involved in malawis internal problems in fact the differences between mai banda nad mutharika started long before sata became president and invited her so this is purely an internal issue for malawi and zambia shouldn’t be drawn into it.
this is my opinion and i hope it has helped the matter.
enjoy your day

being learned doesn’t make people immune to being dictators or unreasonable, i mean i am a learned man but am bound to error at times, we are all humans and in all honesty i think very few zambians are aware of the exact position in malawi if there is anyone out there with some in depth analysis of what’s going on out there i would really appreciate, or if you could refer me to some objective websites that have it.
all am saying colleagues is lets not be too judgemental on people power really changes how people operate, and most of the time certain communistic and socialistic aspects of African lives were precipitated by our former colonialists a long time ago way before modern Africa was born. African heads of state have a tough time because they need to parot between the interests of their people and the west and other forces. this is not to say that as people we should be taken for granted because chnage can never be stopped less change, changes you.

Good point dear, does anyone know why the british high commissioner was expelled? doing an act is one thing, its merits and demerits are another.
i have problems with condemning human beings with little or no justification. for instance today gadaffi is a demon but France his current adversaries embraced him not so long ago after the lockerbie bombings saga was resolved through payments, and no one seems to wonder why in fact you will be shocked that libya will be worse off without him, Afghanistan and Iraq are unique examples. granted the evil he did am just trying to drive the point home that judgement of character is one thing that should be done with extreme caution sobriety and understanding of issues, especially in African states.

But we zambians can talk, everyone writing here is somehow not happy with what the other person has said.
Lets all be wise and write what can build Zambia, this is our country and we are bound to make mistakes in life and learn from the same mistakes. Lets advise and not insult or shout each other. Lets love each other and love our President and the people’s choice, his votes were loud and clear. its like taking a new job, you need to be oriented and learn a few things. He is changing slowly just like RB, we all remember how he had image builders, hired from abroad. Sata making more money our pockets is avoiding such and making use of Zambians.
So its us Zambians to guide were things go wrong.

Imwe!! dont insult each other. Be objective and pragmatic. If mama Banda’s life is at risk in Malawi, international law demands that she be given asylum when she requests for it. This is not up to HEMCS but according to internatinal ethics. After all we have had a lot of refugees in zambia and at no time did we send them back against their will or when there was a change of government in Zambia.
