A Lilongwe based media expert has warned that Joy Television broadcasting from Zambia will be dangerous to President Bingu Wa Mutharika and his administration than leaving the TV station to broadcast in Malawi.
Commenting on the development, Jerome Magawa, said this move shall send wrong signals to the international community that there is no freedom of the press in Malawi.
“What is being demonstrated here is that Malawi is a dictatorship. It has to take the democratic Zambia to give a license to a Malawian private TV to operate from outside Malawi.”
He observed that for Joy Television to seek “refugee” in Zambia, it shows that the TV station had exhausted all the channels in Malawi and cried to a foreign country for help.
“Joy TV has been closed down for the last four years and it is a long time for anyone to endure. I pity the guys because they are now like refuges seeking media freedom in a friendly democratic country”.
He said this development also means it’s the Zambians who shall gain economically from the Joy Television investment, at a time when unemployment in Malawi has reached an all time high.
Son to the former Malawian president, Atupele, told local media that President Sata’s government has given Joy Television permission to broadcast from the Eastern Provincial headquaters of Chipata which borders Malawi.
President Sata is also quoted in the Zambia media to have welcomed the move, saying it is a great investment for Zambians which shall create employment opportunities and open up the Eastern Province of Zambia to new technologies.
Joy Television Station was closed down in 2007 by the Malawi government after broadcasting for four months and has been denied a broadcasting license since then.

That is the reason why africa will never develop in the area of media coverage.Surely by not allowing there own media institution to operate in it’s native country show’s how the freedom of information is greatly affected in malawi. In zambia the state owned media was very bias by reporting bad thing’s to my president (sata). He has maintained it by removing a few corbwarbs and it is in operational now such that some of us who never listened to news have now started. The malawi GOVT should reconsider it’s decision and swallow the pride by allowing there own private media to operate in there country.By doing so will create the much needed employment and show to the world at large that they ur true democrates.

There in nothing wrong with broadcasting from Zambia.like stated, already this is un economical boost for eastern province,as long as all is done in line with the Zambian laws. Mutharika is a low life dictator, drunkard who has no expect for the citizens of hi country.

@ Justine, thank you, for your comment, you know some people just comment without thinking. They will just tune in and watch BBC,CNN, etc without asking about their origins, shame. Malawian Joy TV is welcome and there is no big deal.

Broadcasting is a business and everybody is free to invest in that business in the land of their choice if at all they are convinced that it is economically viable to do so, while terms and conditions apply.
