‘SHY-LOCK’ MONEY Lenders Keep ATM Cards Of DEBTORS In KAWAMBWA

MONEY lenders in Kawambwa have been grabbing ATM cards from clients for fear of losing their money, Tumfweko understands.
The money lenders popularly known as shylocks have been keeping their debtors’ ATM cardsfor long periods of time because they fear their clients may not honor their monthly agreements.
And a random survey by tumfweko has revealed that money lending is one of Kawambwa’s booming businesses.
The survey has also revealed that shylocks enjoy lending their money known as “kaloba” to teachers who are their most important customers.
Kaloba is a term given to money lent to a client by a shylock with an aim of getting it back with accumulated interest which in most.
And when reached for a comment some teachers who sought anonymity explained that most of their colleagues have been losing property worth millions to money lenders for failure to settle kaloba.
They said some of their friends have been going to withdraw money early at night at each during pay days for fear of being spotted during daytime by hostile money lenders.
But Kawambwa District Education Board Secretary (DEBS) Justus Mponda has been critical of teachers who have been borrowing carelessly.
Mr. Mponda has been castigating teachers who have been over borrowing from shylocks urging them to stop.
The DEBS has been advising his teachers to take advantage of the loan facilities that were being offered at the banks.
He has said it is degrading for a learned person to resort to borrowing from the shylocks as their interest rates were very high.

This is very common practise in some countries around, seen it in Namibia, Botswana and SA (not sure if this is still happening after NCA). They go beyond keeping the ATM card, they even get the PIN number, to verify the PIN number, they have a swiping machine. So at month end, the money lender stands by ATM machine with several ATM cards and gets what belongs to Ceaser. What some borrowers do is immediately they leave the ATM card, they go to the bank, report the card as stollen and get a replacement. The shylock ends up with an invalid card. Life.

  32. toti   November 8, 2011 at 7:51 pm

Talking about salaries, all civil servants are under paid but y are teachers involved in such scandals? If we are to compare a teacher’s pay to that of a nurse,we’ll learn that teachers get more than nurses but you will never hear them lowering themselves like our teachers. This is a public site and thats why i havent exposed their net pay.BUT still their pay shud be raised to help them stop the kaloba imprisonment.
