CHIPOLOPOLO star striker Jacob Mulenga has once again sustained a serious knee-injury and is ruled out of action for six to nine months which has automatically kept him out of next year’s African Cup of Nations, Zambianfootball.net can reveal.
The news of Zambia’s most prized asset missing the upcoming African Cup of Nations will shock the nation after hope was put on the former Afrisports man to lead the line in Equatorial Guinea after his heroics at the Angola 2010 edition earned him a spot in the final 23-man team of the tournament.
The FC Utrecht target-man, who was handed a two year extension to his contract and see him stay at the club until 2014, tore his Anterior Cruciate Ligament in his left- knee during Sunday’s man of the match performance in a thrilling 6-4 victory against legendary club Ajax Amsterdam.
This latest injury comes on the exact same match-day as last year when a ligament tear in his right knee, caused Jacob to miss the final league 22 matches of the season for Utrecht and only featured twice for Zambia in in the African Cup of Nations qualifiers.
“The knee is being prepared for surgery in 3-4 weeks, with immediate rehabilitation, but this will certainly six to nine months to complete,” Utrecht team doctor Frank von Hellemondt said.
On Wednesday, Chipolopolo Boys coach Herve Renard left him out of the squad which leaves at 07:15 on Thursday morning to set up camp in South Africa before flying to Nigerian city of Kaduna were a clash against the Super Eagles awaits the Copperbullets with FAZ saying that he was only ruled for a month but reports from Holland indicate other wise and he will miss the AFCON.
