2012 Africa Cup hopeful Thomas Nyirenda has suffered a blow to his chances of making the squad due to a recurrence of his nagging knee injury.
Team Doctor Joseph Kabungo said Nyirenda would be out for three weeks.
The injury rules the Konkola Blades midfielder out of Sunday’s international friendly against Angola.
Kabungo said Nyirenda was expected to recover in good time to make the travelling part to Bata for the Africa Cup.
“Thomas has had a recurrent partial irritation in the medial meniscus. So he will need a diagnostic arthroscopy to the right knee. This will be done tomorrow Thursday at the Italian hospital,” Kabungo said.
“He will be out for up to three weeks. But he will be fit for the Africa Cup of Nations finals. The medical team will still continue monitoring his progress. In the meantime, we will put him under a special medical rehabilitation programme.”
Nyirenda was part of the 2010 Africa Cup team that made a quarterfinal finish. He joins Sudan based Jonas Sakuwaha on the injury list. Sakuwaha is out for two weeks.
