A 2007 lucrative deal between pay channel Supersport and the South African Absa Premiership League has begun trickling down to PSL players with Zambia’s goal minder, Kennedy Mweene who plays for Free State Stars walking away with not less than K93.4 million per month.
Meanwhile, the PSL has overtaken the Egyptian league to become the richest league in Africa and the world’s third most lucrative league.
According to the Sunday Times of South Africa, the 2007 securing of a K996.8 billion (R1.6 billion) broadcast rights bonanza from pay channel Supersport has led to the skyrocketing of PSL players’ earnings to the extent that playing in South Africa is now as lucrative as accepting a European offer.
“Top players like Mweene (Kennedy) will now be getting as much as R150, 000 (K93.4 million) per month plus hefty win bonuses and shares of prize money,” the paper says. “A good league and cup season could net him and especially Mamelodi Sundowns stars R5 million or more.”
Salaries for other Zambians playing their club football in that country were however not disclosed.
The paper quotes Cappy Matutoane, the national organiser for South African Football Players Union (Safpu) as saying that the wage rises have trumped union expectations.
Agents in that country estimate that the average new contract value for a PSL Player is R500,000 per year.
The Sunday Times goes on to mention that while the PSL is becoming more and more lucrative, the opposite is obtaining at most European clubs due to the debt crisis in that continent. This has led to local stars like Bidvest Wits midfielder, Mark Haskins turning down offers from top European clubs in preference for the home league.
Playing i South Africa, it is believed, offers a great scope for endorsements plus kinder tax and low living costs. And the paper also disclosed that the PSL is now the richest
league in Africa having overtaken the Egyptian Premier League in recent seasons. “In salary terms, the PSL is now
level pegging with Austria’s A League, and gaining on the US top league, the MLS,” the paper adds.

From your own Information. Samuel Etoo the cameroonian, gets £300,000 equvlt to K2.4 billion per Week, and thats per week, not per month, then we’ve got the ROONEY’S, The Ronaldo’s, The Messi’s of this world who gets around £250,000 per week, plus the endorsements deals which amounts to £20-£50million pounds from adidas, Nike, Pepse, etc respectively…. So, the south african league has got a long way to go. and, its ‘an insult’ to compare it with Europian leagues.

South African league is still way below major footballing leagues .South Africans are only better in putting so much money in organisation unlike rewarding the parcipants . Wat makes lucruativity of a league is business sense .. I don’t think ther is so much money for clubs in the Psl ,sales of replicas , shirt advertisement ,collective club sponsorship by firms and individual endosements 4 players . Europeans ,middle east and South Americans are way better Psl in terms of monetary rewards . than Chamanga and Chris Katongo still earns more money than Psl stars . The chinese clubs can afford to pay Anelka £200000 @@ @per week ,when psl giants are failing to meet transfer feess of about $70000 for a young and promising star ( Evans Kanya). They opt to go for cheaper and undervalued zimbabean players . It is for the same reason that ther has been little movement for zambian players to South Africa . Zambian players are better rewarded in DRC,Europe and North Africa

You little minded Zambians like that of a chicken,what cam you tell me about this country’s well being? Am surprised that you have forgotten the history of Sata,who at a time;
1.supported Chilubas 3rd term bid
2.He has served in three governments with fails all over his back and only performed in Chilubas regime for the Camera during his Health minister days.
3.Now you are saying am insulting the president,when I ve factually pointed his failures.
You pipo if you are benefitting from the current government and you want do use your hearts for decision making then you are wrong,use your heads Zambians. Satana lied when he was campaigning with his 90 days claim….Am more informed baiche not your foolishness. Step up to my level then you ll understand,you thinking you are insulting me affects me.
