Solwezi Airport To Gobble 117 Billion Kwacha

First Quantum in conjunction with the Ministry of Works, Supply and Communication is spearheading a 117 Billion Kwacha upgrade of Solwezi Airport in North Western Province.antumtTT

The upgrade will allow the airport to handle bigger aircraft like Boeing 737s, a development expected to further fuel the growth of diversified industries such as agriculture and tourism away from mining.

General Kingsley Chinkuli, First Quantum Minerals Country Manager says the upgraded airport is expected to be a major trigger-point for accelerated economic growth for North Western Province and the rest of Zambia.

He was speaking when the Minister of Works, Supply and Transport, Yamfwa Mukanga inspected the progress of the airport upgrade.

The airport up grade works are expected to be completed by May 2012.

Rob Scott, First Quantum Roads Division Operations Manager, disclosed that the new look Solwezi Airport will have a 2,700 metre runway, and that the upgrade exercise was progressing well.

The upgrade of Solwezi Airport is among the flagship projects First Quantum is undertaking in improving infrastructure in North Western Province and other parts of Zambia.

They include the improvements of the Chingola/Solwezi road which is the main access to North Western Province.

In addition, First Quantum is undertaking a five-year programme to revamp Solwezi General Hospital to the tune of K11 billion.

This indeeed is the development the people of NW have been looking for. Apart from that you must construct a university, do a better town planning of Solwesi anf complete the Mutanda-Chavuma road. local people must also benefit from their resources rather than funding constructions of Universities in other provinces at e expense of regions where money come from.

Good news indeed. My concern tho is the time frame. 5 months seem too short to me if meaning upgrade is to be performed. Does any one know if geotechnical exploration has already been performed?

  9. Boss   December 30, 2011 at 12:27 am

  28. muna depotashi   January 3, 2012 at 5:27 am

This should not come as a surprise , it is part of corporate social responsibility. And it is long overdue and an iceberg compared to what FQ is realizing from the province. Wake up people. Push for quality. This is not a PF project. Lundas, luvales , kaondes must be smiling… You can delay progress but you cannot stop it. Here we come!!!!

  29. ONE TIME   January 3, 2012 at 10:34 am

Thanks atleast the lozis will feel time

  30. INDOSHI   January 4, 2012 at 9:20 am

Wizard mulindoshi chacine how can every new regime start new projects all the time? Such long projects that take as long as 50years? Pick sense from Kapena whats that airport for. Do the Kaonde villagers need an airport its just for their own benefit to easily transport our gold than using current ZALAWI. 5miloshi and kimasala people are able to land their aircrafts anywhere

  31. KIBWELA KASONGO   January 23, 2012 at 4:27 am

Ba Programmer naba Candid, salapukeni(wake up)Solwezi is Kaonde Land and not Lozi land. Any way, Mwinsho, if you are still talking tribes I beg to shun you, I am married to a Bemba, My mother who is Kaonde was married to a Lamba and I am sure there are a lot more in Zambia in the same situation.

Wise up Guys, this tendency makes people support even wrong things when they are commited by their tribes-mates…
