This is western rubbish and not applicable in our african setting, although there are a few good points that may be useful to some single men with cold feet. In the African Tradition you propose to your girlfriend first in private. After she says yes and you agree, then you send an Emissary, normally an uncle or elderly close relative to approach her parents and make the proposal for you. Her parents will assume that you have not yet secretly proposed your girlfriend and will set a date for a meeting where you will give your agenda. They will then go to consult her daughter and bring the answer to the meeting. Note that there is no direct discussion between you and the girl’s parents. All discussion is through the Emissary.
