Intricate details of the wayward behaviour by some Chipolopolo players and officials continue to emerge with Felix Katongo emerging among the latest victims.
Katongo has been implicated among the players that breached curfew codes by Clifford Mulenga who has since been expelled from camp.
FAZ vice-president Boniface Mwamelo is among the mastermind of the player binging episode and was allegedly supported by Lusekelo Kamwambi – the team manager.
Sports deputy minister Rayfold Mbulu is not amused at the behaviour of Zambian players and officials demanding stringent disciplinary action.
According to sources, Mbulu has directed that firm action be taken against erring members of the delegation to maintain high levels of discipline in camp.
The sources disclosed that some FAZ officials at the competition have perpertually engaged in illicit activities until they enticed players to join.
“They took advantage of the win over Equatorial Guinea to get some players to places which they should not have gone,” a source in Equatorial Guinea said.
Some members of the technical bench, which includes Kamwambi, have been implicated in the scandal that suggests illicit activity in camp is deep rooted.
Meanwhile, Mulenga has told MTNfootball that he was never asked to apologise to coach Herve Renard for breaking the team’s curfew that led to his expulsion from the Africa Cup of Nations.
Mulenga was expelled from the Zambia team on Tuesday afternoon after a late night out in Malabo on January 30 with four other players.
“I was never asked to apologise for going out on Monday by the coach,” Mulenga told MTNFootball.com in Malabo, where he is awaiting his flight back to his South African base on Thursday.
On Tuesday, FAZ issued a statement that Mulenga was ejected from the Africa Cup after showing no remorse for his late night out with three other players on Monday in Malabo while the other players were forgiven after apologising.
“What has been written [is] not true and I can tell you for a fact that Renard called me when we got back to Bata at the team hotel after having a snack and told me I was leaving the team.
“The coach said I was a bad influence on the other players and it was in the team’s best interest that I leave and at no time was I asked to say sorry.”
But Renard on Wednesday refused to answer any questions relating to Mulenga’s expulsion from Africa Cup.
Mulenga further dropped another bombshell revealing that Felix Katongo, younger brother to skipper Christopher, was part of the late night out in Malabo.
“Felix Katongo was with us and I am shocked his name did not come up. He actually failed to even wake up for breakfast with Mbesuma on Tuesday while I went down for breakfast with Hichani and Jonas,” Mulenga said.
The other three players were strikers Jonas Sakuwaha and Collins Mbesuma and defender Hichani Himoonde who unlike the other four has started all of Zambia’s last three games.
Mulenga and Saukwaha did not play in any of Zambia’s Group A matches, while Mbesuma and Katongo played as substitutes in the 2-2 draw against Libya on January 29 in Bata.
