ZAMBIA Thump Sudan To Progress To AFCON Semi-Final

Chipolopolo with coach Herve Renard

Zambia’s Chipolopolo have qualified to the semifinals of the 2012 Gabon/E. Guinea after beating Sudan 3-0 on Saturday 2/4 evening.
Goals from defender Stophira Sunzu in the first half and second half goals by captain Chris Katongo, James Chamanga was all Zambia needed to seal through.

Zambia eased into the African Nations Cup semi-finals with a 3-0 win over Sudan on Saturday in the first of the weekend’s quarter-final clashes.

A 15th minute goal from defender Stopilla Sunzu, a second after 66 minutes from captain Chris Katongo and a third four minutes from time by James Chamanga ensured Zambia reached their first Nations Cup semi-final since 1996.

Sunzu rose unchallenged to head home a free kick as Zambia stamped their dominance on the match almost from the start in a workmanlike performance.

Katongo scored on the rebound after his penalty attempt had been saved by Sudan’s Akram El Hadi Salem for his third goal of the tournament.

The penalty came after tricky play down the wing forced a trip on Rainford Kalaba by Saifeldin Ali Hidris, who got a second caution to became the fifth player sent off at the tournament being co-hosted by Equatorial Guinea and Gabon.

Substitute Chamanga curled home a shot from inside the area in the 86th minute to complete an easy win for Zambia after some sloppy defending by Sudan.

Zambia had two early efforts to signal their attacking intent before the opening goal while Sudan sought to break on the counter and were restricted to shooting from distance.

Sudan, who had reached the last eight for the first time since 1970, rarely troubled the Zambian goal.

Zambia stay in Bata for Wednesday’s semi-final as they await the winner of Sunday’s clash between Ghana and Tunisia, which is being played in the Gabonese provincial town of Franceville.
Zambia will meet the winners between Ghana and Tunisia in the Semifinals.

It’s CAF (Confederation of African Football) and not FIFA (Federation of International Football Associations) that runs AFCON (Africa Cup of Nations). Europe run UEFA (Union of European Football Associations). Asia has its own and so is Latin America, the COPA America. So in Africa it’s CAF, headquartered in Cairo-Egypt and led by Cameroonian Isa Hayatou. FIFA is the world motherbody, led by Swiss Sepp Blatter. Your point is that of poor stadium attendance. Yes, CAF should have considered the crowds in awarding the right to host…

Associations like FAZ, SAFA in South Africa etc are affiliated to CAF, which is affiliated to FIFA. So FIFA runs the World Cup while CAF runs AFCON. UEFA with French legends like Michel Platini run the EURO.

UNFORTUNATELY 5 girls where run down by an overspeeding bus in the wild celebration in Ndola and 3 are believed to have died on the spot. MTSRIP…

Please people of Zambia, LETS celebrate responsibly. Sprot must not begin to take lives irresponsibly. I was at the accident scene, it was a very sad picture.

However, a big Congrats to the boys, coach, faz and the people of Zambia for this achievement. Lets take one step more and bring the trophy. GO ZAMBIA GO!!

The ancestral spirits just told me that Zambia is winning the AFCON cup on the 12th of February 2012 in Brasville. Our oponents will only be able to see 11 players but wont see the other 11 who perished there in 1993.

For me I would not celebrate this fete. Sudan played well coordinated football while our boys were just kicking the ball anyhow. I do not see the boys beyond the semis if they do not reproduce the form the showed against Senegal. At 1 point someone thought Zambia was in white kekekekeke
