Government has finally come out to give its position on the on going debate on gay rights ignited by UN Secretary General Ban KI Moon.
QFM NEWS reports that Chief Government Spokesperson Fackson Shamenda has told a media briefing in Lusaka today that the laws of the land are very clear that homosexuality is not allowed in Zambia.
Mr Shamenda says Zambia will therefore not entertain the amendment of the law to allow for the recognition of gay rights.
Mr. Shamenda wonders why the issue of homosexuality has become an issue when the UN Chief raised a number of important issues during his visit other than the issue of gay rights.
Responding to questions by journalists Mr. Shamenda said government will not waste time on an issue that is not of importance.
He says there are a number of important developmental issue government can concentrate on instead of debating an issue that is guided by the law.
And the information, broadcasting and labour minister says the allegations made by former vice president George Kunda that the country has become undemocratic under the PF government are calculated at attracting sympathy from the international community on former leaders being probed.
Mr. Shamenda says it is evident that Mr. Kunda is panicking and using the baseless accusations to divert attention from the ongoing crusade against corruption.
He says the PF government is committed to upholding human rights, the rule of law and constitutionalism, contrary to Mr. Kunda’s accusations.
Mr. Shamenda has since challenged the former republican vice president to cite a case where former leaders have been harassed and arbitrarily charged with offences outside the due process of the law.
Meanwhile, Mr. Shamenda has advised Mr. Kunda to go ahead and involve the Southern African Development Community (SADC) on the matter.
He says the PF government will have nothing to hide to SADC because it has all the facts right.

You are so naive you people who are applauding Sata for what Shamenda said. Sata only realized that Zambians were getting angry over calls to legalize gay rights hence allowing sahamenda to only state what the current constitution states and nothing else. I would respect sata and you who are celebrating him if he came out strongly condemning gay rights unlike where he is only saying the law forbids homosexuality in zambia, what about the new constitution will it forbid it too? Ban Ki moon happily decalred that Sata and his government were so principled as they rendered their support to all human rights including same sex oriatantions, I suppose gay rights, and Sata was very quite. they should have come out during the presence of Ki Moon to rubbish their support for gay rights but they didn’t. It therefore a woondwick hoax to blind simple minded people which shamenda brought about knowing well that is what Zambians would like to hear yet in their haert of hearts they support gay rights. Just wait for the June cosntitution draft.KK too is a let down as he supports gay rights.

Any sensible Zambian should listen to Positives’ comments, it is not prudent to simply celebrate what Shamenda said, this issue requires deep thought and scrutiny. The fact that this issues was even brought up in Zambia is of significant concern when the constitution has a clear stand on it, did Ban disregard the constitution to suggest otherwise. If Zambians are not vigilant, they will wake up to the rude shock of PF becoming the most unpopular and hated government in the history of Zambia. Mark my words.

Some pipo will neva be positive in life, why would a person post insults on this space?what benefit does it bring. some pipo so blinded by tribalism that they cannot see their own bondage to tribalism. a party that wins only one province each elecetion is a sign that they’ve failed to convince zambians of their vision. pliz HH assess why you win convincingly on in one province before you can rule this country.pipo stop posting insults.
