TRANSPORT and communications minister Yamfwa Mukanga says the government is in the process of phasing out the blue and white colours for public minibuses in order to remove the partisan image it carries.
In 1996, the MMD government imposed the two colours on all public minibuses in honour of the then ruling party.
MMD has the blue and white colours as part of its emblem; and the former ruling party removed the green colour, with which public minibuses were identified as a way of asserting its authority on the transport system.
Mukanga said his ministry was in the process of consulting stakeholders about the neutral colours that the minibuses would be identified with.
He said currently, the ministry was engaged with the Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA), among others, over the matter.
“We have been discussing this issue with RTSA and trying to consult other stakeholders. We don’t want another partisan colour; so maybe we can have a ribbon from RTSA with national colours to be placed in all public minibuses for a start. Eventually the blue and white should go because we want to provide a neutral colour that will harmonise with the national flag,” he said in an interview yesterday.
Asked when this process would start, Mukanga responded: “Most likely sometime early next year, we should get started with that.”

And at what cost to the zambian ? some of these decisions its like someone who has mashebe waking up in the morning and is simply short of what to do ! As it is business is tough and you want to force people to rebrand their buses becuase you feel like it ?
It was Prof Nkandu Luo ( Now in the PF) who introduced that colour….as her. She knows who imported that specific colour of paint in bulk before that statutory instrument was signed.
Too costly for the bus owners who are trying to come to terms with the increase in emoluments of their drivers, bus cleaners, mechanics and those who look after their children when they are away – the domestic worker, and on top of that coming to terms with the impending compulsory National Service for all soon to be Grade 12 School leavers!lol tough world, erratic fuel supplies, erratic electricity and water supply, increased bread price oh my goodness. indeed like someone says, first work on the roads.
