Lack Of Accomodation Causes High Pregnancy And Abortion Rate At Mwaata High School In Kalomo

Over 160 girls at Mwaata high school in Kalomo district have no accommodation and are depending on rented houses in
the township shanty compounds a situation that both the school authorities and its parents teachers association has attributed to high pregnancy and abortion rate at the institution .

And Gender and development minister Inonge Wina has called on the communities to work with government to come up with projects that will enhance the advancement of girl child education.

Wina said this in a speech read on her behalf by southern province deputy permanent secretary, Alfred Chiingi at the unveiling for the foundation stone for girls hostels ceremony at Mwaata high school in Kalomo district by its sister partner institution, the Colaiste Chiaran community school of Ireland recently.

Wina said government was happy that the people of Ireland had come to partner with the local people to construct a girl’s hostel that will easy the accommodation burden for the effected going school girls.
The project that is earmarked for completion in 9 months time is been undertaken by Mwaata high school and Colaiste Chiaran community school of Ireland at a total cost of K1 billion and once completed the new
hostels will house 140 girls. The team from Ireland that visited the school recently made a contribution of 50 million kwacha towards the project.
Mwaata Day High School authorities have in the recent past expressed worry over the increasing rate of pregnancies and abortions being recorded at the learning institution.
School Headteacher, Benson Hachoombe earlier said in an interview that an average of 10 girl pupils fail to report for school at the start of every new term due to either induced abortions or pregnancy.
Mr Hachoombe has since appealed to guardians to assist the school administration to impart good morals in the children to avoid such incidents.
“There is a growing concern especially with girls. The issue of pregnancies and abortions has become common, there is little that the school can do to prevent the vice unless parents are highly involved.
Children are mostly living in rented rooms on their own and as a day school, control is very difficult,” he said.
The school with 1,207 pupils out of which 458 are girls has a large number than renting apartments in the surrounding areas while a small fraction is staying with relatives.
The setup is said to have resulted in undesirable behaviour among some pupils who have involved themselves in illicit practices such as unprotected sex and patronising beer houses.

The one to blame are school authorities not pupils. Why do they have to make it boarding school without hostels and why didn’t they report to the government. Oh sorry that is the way we Zambian are when see dorners, we bring our country to low level. Shame on you school authorities

Allow me to react to rog ku’s comment where he/she wants to direct the blame on school authorities.
It appears rog ku does not understand the English Language or she/he like many leaders, does not take time to read the stories before making comments.
According to the Headteacher,”Children are mostly living in rented rooms on their own and as a day school, control is very difficult,” he said. Quoted verbatim. where does it say it is a boarding school? Please read and understand and then make a comment

  16. rog ku   July 16, 2012 at 4:34 pm

@the academician you are fool. How can a pupil rent a house were the parent are of the same area. And can a girl pupil rent a house without parents concern
If its a day school why are they planing to build hostels
And where on earth can a parent sent a girl child to a far place school as a day scholer. Think

  17. Janet c   July 16, 2012 at 5:28 pm

How about introducing a fine/jail for any married man guilty of impregnating a school girl – after all it is the men who fwaya these girls in the first place. Secondly, how about a course for wives to teach them how to perform properly in bed so that their husbands do not feel the need to sleep around

  18. francis   July 16, 2012 at 6:54 pm

From the look of things here the government has to come in build more hostels to overcome this problem because 160 pupils they hsve no hestles that is a very big number thats why they are renting rooms or houses.the school authority also they are to condemn how can they go over their limit.

  20. MM   July 16, 2012 at 8:41 pm

hahaha really is that the real reason?? unprotected sex is what causes pregnancies!!

  21. GunnerME   July 16, 2012 at 9:01 pm

@janet c, you can do better than that! Why should the blame be entirely heaped on men? God blessed us all with a brain & surely girls must make use of theirs to know whats bad & good for them! Its time for you the women folk to stand up & take responsibility for your actions instead of blaming men for all your failures.

  22. Janet c   July 16, 2012 at 10:07 pm

@gunner me – last time I checked it is men that imPregnate women, and in this case it is adult men prying and abusing vulnerable school girls. Those adult men shld think with their brains ( not their dicks) before exposing their beer bellies, man boobs and shrivelled dicks to girls young enough to be their daughters! They should be caged and when they themselves are sodomised in prison, maybe just maybe they will finally use their brains

  24. kakolwe   July 17, 2012 at 7:09 am

hm. Mhmm. Ati shrivelled dicks. Awee.
@ Rog ku. Seems you live in a cocoon. There are such schools all over Z. Mostly govt uprades school to secondary school without upgrading infrastructure. Parents from outflang areas register their children at these schools. The school authorities have no right to investigate the pupils’ family tree to enroll them. Kula bwino iwe.

  25. kakolwe   July 17, 2012 at 7:17 am

@Janet c, long time sweetheart! How does a shrivelled dick, hidden in flabby pot belly & acompanied by drunken bad breath enter a closed tight and dry pussy of an 18 year old school girl?
The converse is true. Tight pussy must 1st open, wet with desire & shrivelled dick will bulge beyond pot belly & be swallowed whole by girl. The rest, like they say is history. & we are back at 1

  26. The Academician   July 17, 2012 at 2:33 pm

Allow me to react to rog ku’s comment where he refers to me as a fool.My question was not on what was obtaining on the ground but on semantics and the actual words said by the Headteacher and i quote “Children are mostly living in rented rooms on their own and as a day school, control is very difficult,” This statement means that the school is A DAY SCHOOL and hence the authorities have no control over pupils’ conduct once out of school grounds. Schools in southern province are so scattered that pupils have to find accommodation near the school to access education. Please re-read and understand the comments and then make a comment. Do not pretend to be educated, ask and it shall be explained to you.

  29. umuntu   July 17, 2012 at 10:57 pm

All these years of independence, Zambia cannot even boast of a reasonable institute of education and health. Even the worst form of colonialism made sure there was proper education and health systems for people. When will we wake up? it’s time to realize our dream. Arise people!!

  30. MundiaM   July 18, 2012 at 3:40 pm

Girl children are mostly vulnerable in poor societies. It is very painful for mothers in rural areas with no source of income to send their dear daughters away from them, just in the hope that their children will receive a good education and redeem themselves from the clutches of poverty. It is worse for these girls to dash the hopes of their parents by allowing men to abuse them and impregnant them. This must be heart breaking for the poor families who get disappointed by these girls and the men who prey on them. A girl child must be brought up with virtue and this can only be instilled with close supervision by parents at home after school hours or by teachers in properly set up boarding schools with boarding mistresses. My daughters went to a catholic boarding school for their junior secondary and last year when they passed their grade 10 and I was moving towns I decided against increasing the distance between them and the family and put them in a good day school. Children need Gods’ wisdom to raise!

Even UNZA & CBU has accommodation problems. Government must build hostel instead of new districts. Please look at PRIORITIES.
