Malaria Claims Over 3,000 Lives In Eastern Province

A Senior Medical Officer in Eastern Province says the region has recorded the highest malaria incidence in the country resulting in 3,980 deaths between 2009 and 2011.

Provincial Health Officer Kennedy Malama said malaria has remained the highest cause of outpatient attendances and deaths at most health facilities in the province.

Dr Malama revealed this during the Provincial Malaria stakeholders meeting held at Comfort Lodge in Chipata district yesterday.

He further stated that the malaria cases have surpassed HIV/AIDS in causing disease and death burden in the entire district in the province.

The Medical Officer named Nyimba, as having recorded the highest cases with 1, 069 followed by Petauke with 1, 063 among other districts.

Dr Malama said it is for this reason that the Ministry of Health in the province in collaboration with stakeholders will ensure 100 percent coverage of sleeping spaces with Insectiside Treated Nets (ITN) and improve its utilization by public.

He stated that his office will continue with the indoor residue to reach all targeted structures in the entire district in the province.

And Dr Malama has however, warned illicit drug and ITN dealers suspected to have been stealing from the public health that they will face the wrath of the authority.

And speaking earlier, Communicable Disease Control Specialist, Jairos Mulambya said that the Ministry of Health will continue working hard to ensure that malaria tests equipment are available in all the health facilities in the province.

Dr Mulambya said the department will ensure that there is malaria control to avoid the occurrence of new cases.

He however called on people in the region to use Fansidar, Coartem and Quinine as recommended by Science and Researchers for different categories of malaria.

Ba Dr mwabepa. Check your statistics again. At NO point has HIV/AIDS deaths been higher than malairia and /or infant mortality related to child birth in Zambia specifically & Africa in General. Read your pre-written speaches before you go public ba Dr.

Its also important that we comfirm malaria in patients coz a lot of fevers are treated n recorded as malaria esp in public health facilities. In most pvt hospitals fevers are thoroughly investgated and antimalarials only given to confirmed malaria cases.

Is it real true that Petauke was second or least with 163?

    Interesting case indeed
@ EDGAR its actually the private institutions which always give positive results so as to increase the drug bill for the patient. More money in their pockets. Help them desist from such vices.
