Government has today signed a financing agreement with the World Bank for the Muzuma%u2013Victoria Falls power transmission project amounting to about 56.5 million United States dollars.
The objective of the project is to upgrade the Kafue west-Muzuma Livingstone 220 KV transmission line to 330 KV.
The line will also be connected to a new Livingstone 330/220 KV Substation.
The World Bank has also signed a project agreement with ZESCO for project implementation.
Finance minister Alexander Chikwanda who signed on behalf of the Zambian government said government has prioritized infrastructure development in the energy sector in order to support economic growth and development.
Mr. Chikwanda noted that Zambia has been experiencing a deficit in power but that government is committed to ensuring that the country expands its power output.
And World Bank country director for Zambia, Zimbabwe and Malawi Kundhavi Kadiresan said the World Bank supports the Zambian government’s decision to put energy infrastructure development as a priority.
Ms. Kadiresan observed that Zambia should view energy as an export commodity which it can export to other countries once it expanded its generation capacity.
She added that Zambia has a strategic location in the region which provides an opportunity for regional trade in electricity.
The project is expected to be completed within 24 months and is also expected to provide a linkage between Kafue west with Kariba north bank extension 330 KV transmission line.

So this is yet another zesco loan, where they will be required to pay back slowly by increasing tarrifs for the poor. And some morons are happy. All the best anyway…
