THE Zambia Police Service (ZPS) has denied claims that its officers were engaged in a scramble for uniforms at its headquarters last week.
Last Thursday, some police officers were spotted at the police service’s stores department at the Head Quarters in the Ridge Way area trying to get uniforms.
Some officers talked to by The Supreme Times revealed that there was a scramble for uniforms because there was a shortage.
“Unlike our friends in the Air force or Army who get uniforms every now and then, some of us only get uniforms once in four years.
“So, right now we have some combats here (Head quaters) but they are very few. So, everyone is trying to grab a pair and that is where the problem is. Some people are getting three pairs and then beginning to resell,” said one of the affected police officers who declined to be named.
The officer also revealed that even the uniforms being distributed were not a complete set as they were without belts and boots.
He also alleged that the shortage of uniforms in the police service was because even general duty police officers who are supposed to put on the Khaki uniforms with a blue ribbon were also ‘illegally’ putting on the combat which was reserved for the paramilitary, mobile and protective unit.
The police officer called on the Ministry of Home Affairs to sort out the uniform shortage issue in the police service.
But police spokesperson, Elizabeth Kanjela in an interview said she was not aware of any reports of scramble for uniforms in the police service.
Although she confirmed that the police service was currently distributing uniforms to some officers in Lusaka, there has been no reports of uniform shortage.
“But if there is asuch a thing as uniform shortage, officers know where to complain about the matter,” Kanjela said.
Last year, President Sata pledged that his government would look into the challenges faced with police officers saying that he was saddened that some officers’ uniforms were so tattered that their ranks were missing. He also called for the need to harmonise salaries for all men in uniform namely the Zambia Police Service, Zambia National Service (ZNS), Zambia Air force (ZAF) and the Zambia Army.

There is no smoke without fire. Police officers have suffered long enough.Let President Michael Sata be in consonance with the issue of salary harmonization for Zambia police officers. The police are also as important as other government officers who put on uniform. Police officers need that money.Kanjela is only protecting her job but the TRUTH is she does know the truth. Police officers tired of rhetoric, it is time for pragmatism.
