Transport, Works, Supply and Communication Deputy minister Mutaba Mwali said in a statement yesterday the power outage at the Kenneth Kaunda International Airport on Tuesday was caused by a trip on the electricity supply system. And he said despite the outage, the luggage check-in and passengers were screened appropriately and security and safety measures were in place at all times.
Mr Mwali said standby generators were immediately activated and restored power to most parts of the airport except for the concourse where power failure persisted because of a medium voltage panel which had broken down as a result of the power outage.
He said engineers from ZESCO and the National Airports Corporation Limited (NACL) managed to repair the broken down panel and restored supply to the concourse for lighting and checking-in through a bypass.
“Electricity supply to other facilities such as the control block, runway, taxiways and navigation aids was constant during this period through the stand by generators,” Mr Mwali said.
He said investigations to establish the cause of the trip have been instituted.
NACL has since suspended the use of lifts, escalators and the arrival baggage carousel at the airport until full power supply was restored in the terminal building.
IN OTHER COUNTRIES THE RESPONSIBLE MINISTER AND BOSS OF NACL ARE SUPPOSED TO RESIGN ON MORAL GROUND. THIS WAS A BIG SCANDAL. IT IS UNACCEPTABLE. I STILL LOVE PF
Jst make sure it does not happen again
If HH wins 2016 elections I think he will pravitise all the airports including the police service and the owners will be the pure tongas.
Investigations have been launched!!!??? Herein ends the tale. Before these investigations can be launched, can we have the resignation letters from the Managers responsible, as well as the Minister in charge? This is the process that the investigation must take… someone must be fired…
it is so embarrasing for such an international airport to be having power cuts. Worsemore the reasons given for stated power outage in my view are so cheap to buy. its high time we learnt from others on how to run certain departments. Clearly both the airport maintainance deparment and zesco were at fault. when it comes to places like the airport all cables and transformers must be working at almost 100% and if this fails why not install several automatic power supplies look at countries like libya and somlia that are prone to wars, despite thier wars they ensure to it that the airpot is free from power cuts.honestly that was a fail on the managements of both zesco and the airport .If i were you i would take some shame
Awe, HH must be questioned, this is sabortage
HH is at faulty he talks too much!!! But ba PF also be serious fire whoever is at faulty here before this under 5 attack us!
yaba..the ukwanites have failed Zambia..!
Was it for the first time, if so I want to call it an accident and there4 that does not warrant a resignation on whatever grounds.
Thought a statement such as ‘screened appropriately’ may mean anything. But thats good statement for a public officer or public relation officer.
such things can only happen under PF leadership. the minister responsible should resign on moral grounds immediatly, infact the president should also resign.
ONLY UNDER PF SUCH A THING CAN HAPPEN… THATS WHY ITS PamaFi
someone must step down, Sata
Kupusa
Some of the headlines are not appetising at all, improve bane!
You guys, why should the minister resign? is he the main man on operations? It is the engineers’ fault, the minister was with us in parliament working hard as usual.
Mr. Mwali just make sure you work hard to avoid such situations from happening again. Otherwise it wasn’t good.
WILL WE EVER BE OBJECTIVE?
Someone’s cow strays into another man’s garden in muchinga and you say HH must kill himself because he comes from the place where they keep healthy cattle? Grow up you ‘tumfwekoans’
What happened to the Generators? really an airport that big should have several generators
