Zambians Urged to Endorse Death Penalty

The Zambia Open Society Foundation (OSF) has called on Zambians to support the retention of the death penalty clause in the ongoing constitution making process.

Foundation Executive Director Sunday Chanda says this will deter perpetrators of gruesome murders that the country has been experiencing.

Mr. Chanda has told Qfm news in an interview that deleting the death penalty clause from the new Constitution will not help in curbing gruesome murders.

He contends that in as much as the sanctity of life must be respected, there is need to ensure that people take responsibility for their actions and that the death penalty should be the ultimate punishment for murderers.

Justice Minister Wynter Kabimba recently stated that the question on whether to retain the death penalty clause in the new Constitution or not is entirely up to the Zambian people.

But the Joint Policy Action Support program, a consortium of various organizations says death penalty is a violation of the sanctity of human life.

Consortium Chairperson Bishop Innocent Silwamba says Zambians must not allow the death penalty clause to be included in the new Constitution.

    Much as people may become dangerous to our societies it does not give man the power to decide who dies and who lives, for man has never created another man. Zambia is a christian nation so it is claimed, if this is a principle fact, then the whole purpose of declaring Zambia as a christian nation would be defeated. I am a strong supporter of the current regime since its inception,however I do not support everything that they embark on, Kabimba was heard saying that we can not import the Constitution, in reference to those who wants the 50+1, he did not say the 50+1 was to be left to the Zambians to decide, why?………….., but today on the death penalt he is living it to the Zambians, this is because it does not affect there stay in office even if it went through but the 50+1………..Lundenipo. So you can see how self some politicians are

    It is not God who decides who to die. Some one can decide for you or you can do it your self. As far as God is concern he tald Adam you shall die. We shall die through many ways. The Bible allows rulers to kill someone lawfully. Death penalty for murderous should be upheld. But not crimes lack treason.

    We are told that there is heavens and hell which God has Kept and in heaven they are holy people and hell for the bad people.both the quran and the bible talk about the death penalty so i feel strongly we should maintain it for society to continue staying in peace

    For those who say we should delete the death penalty from our statute books should first experience the killing of their wife/husband, son/daughter, mother/father, or any of their loved ones and come back and tell us if truly we should do away with the death penalty. Otherwise they are just greedy chaps who want to continue receiving funds from theirn masters abroad. Those who kill intentionally, perhaps in the course of robbery should simply lose their lives because by denying another person the chance to breathe they should also give up the right to breathe, PERIOD! Death penalty must remain.

    We are a Christian nation abi? The Bible is not a constitution for debate. The death penalty is derived from human wisdom as well as divine wisdom. We ALL know that divine wisdom is superior and NOT debatable…Ok for arguments sake lets now say adultery is now legal…or beating your wife ..or even someone else’s wife is now legal….aha! ….the same repulsiveness you feel for that order should be the same for the death penalty ….then you are normal!….Christians its a pity that YOU of all people should even debate it!…..Jesus DIED BECAUSE OF THE DEATH PENALTY!!!….HELLO did you not know this?…Did god make excuses about it?….NO! to show He was DEAD serious, he sent HIS ONLY SON!…..Leviticus 24 v 17 “‘If anyone takes the life of a human being, he must be put to death” PERIOD!!

    you would not be a Christian without the death penalty ….you would be dead by now…there would be not enough animals to kill for every sin us human beings carry on with these days….Say thank you for the death penalty for its intended purpose and let every man be accountable!! Come to Christ HE is the Saviour not the courts of law.

    These christian apologists. The problem is your religion doesn’t permit critical thinking, I mean learn to deal with issues through philosophical ways and not your scriptural way, not everyone is a christian. I’m a supporter of death penalty.

    Death Penalty must be maintained in our constitution and the president should have the backbone to sign it.Criminals kill innocent people like dogs,without any concern and then this mathafackin bishop silwamba and his foollish consortium say we abolish death penalty.Maybe he has never come face to face with criminals

    @Atheist

    I am glad that you said you are not a Christian because then you are entilted to think all over the place. However for Christians… as you see the sun rising and setting unquestionbly every day of your life…that is how consistent scripture is…anything else is subject to change by circumstances and moods… and thats a very shaky world…thanks for the support on the death penalty.
