Police in Serenje District in Central Province have picked up a 29-year-old man who is alleged to have killed his older brother following a fight over beer.
The 35-year-old victim identified as Tom Chibuye is alleged to have asked the accused, Brian Chibuye, to buy him beer.
However, Brian said he did not have money and later, the brothers had an argument which was followed by a physical fight.
Central Province police chief, Joyce Kasosa, who confirmed this yesterday, said police were holding Brian to assist with investigations.
The victim, who sustained deep cuts on his chest, head and lower lip was discovered in a nearby bush and the police are treating the case as murder.
The incident is believed to have occurred between October 31 and November 2, 2012 in Kachinga in Chief Kapamba’s area in Serenje.
“I can confirm that we are holding the brother of the deceased to assist with investigations because a day before he died, the two had a fight over beer,” Ms Kasosa said.
The body was taken to Serenje District Hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem.
She said the incident was reported by the father of the two brothers.
And a Lusaka magistrate’s court has ordered the Zambia Police Service to conduct an open inquest to ascertain the cause of death of a John Howard housewife who was discovered dead in her house last year.
Resident Magistrate Alice Walusiku wants the police to conduct a coroner’s inquest on the body of Daliness Bubala who was found dead in a pool of blood with a deep cut on her throat on August 3, 2011.
Magistrate Walusiku said an inquest would help the family of Bubala and members of the public establish the truth about the death.
Ms Bubala was on the material day found dead in a pool of blood in her house with a cut on her throat and police suspected that she could have been murdered.
When the matter came up for hearing, the Chawama Police Station officer-in-charge told the court how on August 4, 2011, while he was on duty received a report from members of the public that there was a dead body of a female in John Howard Township.
The officer said he rushed to the scene and discovered that the woman suspected to have been murdered was lying in a pool of blood with a cut on the neck.
He said the police suspected that a sharp instrument had been used to cut Ms Bubala’s throat.
The officer said one of the victim’s children informed the police that she had heard her mother quarrel with her husband, Paul Chimbamulilo. Police have since arrested Chimbamulilo.
Ms Bubala’s neighbours were interviewed and said they did not hear any noise from Ms Bubala’s house before she met her fate.
But Magistrate Walusiku said conducting an open inquest would help ascertain the cause of death.
She ordered that the State conducts a thorough investigation and bring the culprits to court.
