FIVE Zambians have died while several other passengers sustained serious injuries in a road traffic accident in Zimbabwe.
The passengers were on a bus travelling from South Africa to Zambia when the accident happened 103 kilometres from Bulawayo in Zimbabwe.
Police deputy spokesperson Charity Chanda said five Zambians were among other passengers on board a Marcopolo bus registration number ALG 8249.
Ms Chanda said the bus belonging to Mtsuni Bus Services overturned in Bulawayo.
Sixteen passengers sustained injuries and have since been treated and discharged from hospital while others were still admitted to St Lukes and Mpilo Hospitals in Hwange.
The bodies of the deceased are in the mortuary at the two hospitals.
Ms Chanda said the accident happened yesterday around 01:00 hours. More details would be released once a comprehensive report is received from Zimbabwean police.
In a related development, two people died on the spot in Solwezi while five others sustained injuries after being run over by a Toyota Sprinter registration number ALD 2665.
“The accident happened when the driver of the vehicle lost control due to over speeding and ran over the pedestrians who were walking on the left side of the road in Kyawama Township,” she said.
Ms Chanda identified the dead as Brian Yamba and Lawrence Mukuzho aged 33 and 37 respectively of Kyawama Township in Solwezi.
The injured were Makayi Samuyachi 20, Mary Mwanauta 33, and Elias Simuchimba 49, all of Kyawama Township
Others were Davis Kamboyi 25 and George Masuwa 38 of Zambia and Kazomba townships.
The accident happened on Saturday around 21:00 hours on the Solwezi Mutanda Road at Kyawama Market area.
“The driver of the vehicle has not yet been identified as he is still on the run. The injured are admitted to Solwezi General Hospital while the bodies of the deceased are in the mortuary of the same hospital,” Ms Chanda said.
