THREE prisoners have escaped from Kimfinsa State Prison in Kitwe following a power outage the institution experienced on Saturday night.
The three escapees are John Mwansa, 22, who was convicted for motor vehicle theft, Danny Karichi, 22, who was serving a sentence for aggravated robbery and Brian Kachala, who was imprisoned for vandalism.
Commissioner of Prisons Percy Chato, who confirmed the development in an interview in Kitwe yesterday, said the incident happened on Saturday between 21:00 hours and 22:00 hours.
Mr Chato said three prisoners out of the nine that had planned to escape successfully managed to elude prison warders on duty.
“We had a security lapse yesterday [Saturday] where three prisoners escaped from Kamfinsa State Prison here in Kitwe. The prisoners were actually nine but only three managed to escape through the wire fence,” he said.
Mr Chato said the inmates took advantage of the power outage and the heavy rains to escape from their cells before prison security officers fired shots in the air.
He said the prisoners used sophisticated sketches to plan their prison break through the perimeter wire fence.
Mr Chato, however, said security measures have been put in place at the prison to avoid similar occurrences in future.
He also said the Zambia Prison Service is trying to address the problem of staffing in the service to enhance security.
“At Kamfinsa, we only have 100 officers against 2,047 inmates, this is a security risk. We also need to put up a new perimeter wire fence because the one we have is old and dilapidated,” Mr Chato said.
Meanwhile, a 23-year-old man of Kitwe’s Wusakile township has died after being electrocuted while trying to rescue his seven-year-old sister, who was caught on a live electric cable.
Chibote ward councillor Webster Malama confirmed the development in an interview yesterday, which happened on Saturday around 17:00 hours and named the deceased as Sylvester Chama of house number E3-87.
Mr Malama said the girl, who was earlier caught on an electric wire, survived and is out of danger at the Kitwe Central Hospital, where she is admitted.

Wait a minute. They planned the escape and they did so when there was power outage. Was the black out part of the plan? There must have been some external aid.

this escape sounds fishy to me. I would not be suprised if the PF played a part in this escape. Last year the PF released a criminal by the name of Hamianze so that he could spread propaganda against those who are trying to uphold democracy.

Itole. Think before you contribute some nonsense issues on this site. Find some productive things to do other than waisting compny time writing some uneducate things. We are busy encouraging your colleagues on giving a hand on taking our beloved nation to recognised standards. Bwamba bobe.

Who really puts these headless creatures in such offices? Does this fool understand th implication of revealing th security constraints at kamfinsa or any prison? In any case, how long has this maggot been th commissioner? He needs not go yapping about th dilapidated fence and the poor staffing because he actually is th one resoonsible to put things in order. The bastard should stop telling th public there is no security at th prisons and just get his ass on th job or get fire!
