SOME married women in Matero have complained about rampant prostitution in the township, which they say is destroying marriages.
And Tasintha Programme co-ordinator Clotilda Phiri says levels of prostitution during the festive season are always very high because “everybody needs money to socialise”.
Veronica Mbewe, 40, a mother of four in an interview said it was unfortunate that prostitutes had even gone as far as following married men to their homes.
She said some married women in Matero were going through a “hard time” because of the prostitutes, who did not care about anything else but making money.
Women who were found at Matero local court on Tuesday explained that some of them had gone to pay the prostitutes who they had beaten up for having affairs with their husbands and were later on fined for assault by the court.
“We have really suffered…Prostitution in Matero is on the rise.
We don’t even know what to tell our husbands because men are just something else. But whatever happens, we the women are the ones to suffer. We have to take care of the children and we also have to ensure that our children go to school. It is sad I tell you,” said Mbewe.
And Phiri said girls that had completed school were contributing to the high level of prostitution.
“Schools have closed with a chain of school leavers. We have those who have written grade seven, grade nine, and especially those who have written grade twelve and don’t know what the future holds for them in the coming year. This too contributes to the high levels of prostitution. They feel that the easiest way to make money is to go into prostitution,” Phiri said.
She said there was also need to condemn men who buy sex from sex workers.
Phiri said it was evident that sex workers were following men to their homes because there was no business on the streets.
She said a strong man who had values and respected his wife could not be followed by a prostitute at home.
Phiri advised sex workers that there was more to life than prostituting, adding that selling sex comes with repercussions.

Women, why do you have to worry when you already have a home and kids. It only becomes a problem if the Ka Man chases you and replaces you with a prostitute.

If we create jobs for our young men and/or enpower them with some economic enpowerment programmes, they can at least marry some of these girls…The problem is working married men are targeted coz of money not necessarily sex. Also, lets fund NGOs like tasintha so they can recruit more balangizi for teaching these women and help change them.

Stop complaining, just try to re-evaluate the way you look, more especially how you dress. Mind you,
prostitutes are women just like you and the also need husbands. There are just victims of circumstances. So, stop complaining and look into areas that need your attention.

Very few women in Zambia experience love and respect from there husbands. Women just get educated and take care of yourselves! Forget about the so called husbands.
