Sunzu takes over the crown from influential midfielder Rainford Kalaba who won the 2011 award beating Tresor Mputu, fan favourite goalkeeper Kidiaba, Kasusula and striker Samatta Mubwana.
The defender, whose decisive penalties for Zambia granted Chipolopolo the African Nations Cup title in February and qualification to the 2013 edition, polled 340 votes ahed of Mputu’s 300.
According to the Mazembe website, the race was tight and only decided in the final stages of the vote.
Sunzu has been central to both Zambia and TP Mazembe backline forming one of the strongest partnership with Hichani Himoonde.
The former Afrisports defender is favourite to win the CAF African Player of the Year award for players based on the continent ahead of clubmate Kalaba and Muhammed Aboutrika of Egypt.
Goalie Kidiaba polled 250 votes while Samatta got 130, Kasusula was at 60 while Singuluma got only 10.

It is very difficult for defenders to be recognized for their performance as usually focus is on strikers. so this is a big achievement and congratulations to you young man.
