Despite SATA’s Warning, Mealie-Meal Prices In Mungwi, Zambezi, Luapula Continue To Rise

The price of mealie-meal in Mungwi has continued to maintain an upward trend despite government instituting regulatory measures.

A survey by ZANIS in Mungwi today revealed that the price of a 25 kilogramme breakfast is costing K70, 000 while a 25 kilogramme bag of roller meal is fetching K45, 000 at the three suppliers of the commodity in the district.

Local dealers at Mungwi market have attributed the price of mealie meal to high transportation costs from Kasama to Mungwi.

One dealer Gilbert Mulenga has said they are getting a 25 kilogramme breakfast at K 61,000 and a roller meal at K40, 000 from Kasama adding that they could not sell the commodity at anything less than K70,000 and K45,000 respectively due to the high transportation costs.

Some residents have however expressed fear that the price of mealie-meal would go up further if government does not intervene.

Meanwhile, the supply of the commodity has greatly improved following government’s ban on the export of maize to other countries and a check at Mungwi market found huge stocks of breakfast and roller meal.

And Mealie-meal prices have drastically increased in Nakonde district of Muchinga Province despite government having released more maize to all the millers in the country.

A 25 kg bag of roller meal is now selling at K79, 000 from K68, 000 while breakfast meal is now being sold at K80, 000 from K72, 000 last week.

Its called “being stuck between a rock and a hard place”. Free market and free floating prices set by competition and factors of supply on one hand and GRZ hog wash price control on the other. If GRZ enforces control in the mealy meal market which market will be next. Oil, sugar, salt, … Here goes the ZCBC road again!

Our current president has no vision for this country, he’s more interested in playing cat and mouse with the opposition than fulfilling his campaign promises. He’s more of a politician than a leader, which is why he always seeks quick fix solutions hoping to appease the peaople in the short term but end up hurting us in the long term. We need to kick this guy out before it’s too late!!!!!

Its free market!!! You expect the president to impose prices of comodities? What he is doing is infact more than enough; releasing maize to millers on subsdised price, abolishing export of maize to maintain food security also pleading with millers to sell mealie meal @ not more than 50pin & you call this uncommitted? If it is then offer possible solution!!!

This is what you get for making impulsive decisions. Production costs have gone up because of fuel cost, erratic electricity supply, and higher wages (minimum wage). If you thought the producers wouldn’t pass the high wage bill unto the consumer then you live on another planet. This effect will be felt in all sectors..just wait. Lets just pray the kwacha rebasing doesn’t put further stain on the economy. UKwanomics at its best…pa bwato!!!!

I really fail to understand who is advising the president kanshi? Where are the economists to advise. Millers are in the business not the govt! This is the free market economy where prices are determined by the economic forces of demand and supply. Ok quite alright most millers are buying maize from the govt (FRA) but i think it is unfair that the state should control prices. millers have alot of costs involved for them to produce a bag of mealie meal to the consumer even if they are buying maize at a reasonable price. This is really sad, are we going back to one party state or what? The role of the state is to provide an enabling environment for the smooth running of the economy and not to control prices. May god deliver this country!!LOL

There are no absolutes in free economy when private entities deal with govt directly. In this situation an equilibrium price should be tagged to make all parties happy, hence the common man. Yes, if only millers were buying maize directly from farmers that is then govt should have kept a distance. An intervention is relevant at all cost.

Which PF minister have you seen discussing/explaining policy on public fora? Only thing you hear are petty squabbles created by the un vaccinated Kabimba. I ADVISE THE PF GVT TO ENGAGE THE CHINESE GVT TO BRING INTO ZAMBIA 5 CHINESE INVESTORS WHO CAN PRODUCE MELLIE MEALS AT TWICE THE CAPACITY AND 50 LESS THAN THE CURRENT PRICE SO THAT COMPANIES WHO HAVE TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF THE POOR CAN CLOSE.

THERE IS NOTHING LIKE SUPPLY AND DEMAND AND MARKET FORCES HERE. SELFISH RETAILERS KNOW THAT ZAMBIANS CANNOT DO WITHOUT MEALIE MEAL SO THEY WILL EXPLOIT CONSUMERS. LICENCES FOR THESE MUST BE WITHDRAWN WHY SHOULD THEY BUY MEALIE MEAL FROM MILLERS AT K45 and sell at K70? THAT IS THEFT!

Sata is man of fake promises. He is busy engineering the exit of Given Lubinda to be replaced by his son Mulenga Sata but Mulenga will lose. Kabwata is Lubinda’s back door so Kabimba who will never be president should just send his illiterate son with Slyvia Masebo’s imbicile son Dick Jr abroad to misrepresent Zambia. Enjoy your first and last five years you are going in 2016
