Luwingu Farmer Rejects New Currency, Exchanges It In Shops

There was drama at the National Savings and Credit Bank (NATSAVE) in Luwingu district in the Northern Province when one customer refused to receive the new rebased currency.

Musonda Bwalya of Senior Chief Shimumbi rejected the money, saying he was not conversant with the new Kwacha notes and appealed to the bank management to consider giving him the old currency.

He lamented that people in his area will not accept the new notes because the money was very little compared to the value of the old currency.

Mr Bwalya said it was surprising to note this morning that the bank had started issuing new currency without informing the community in senior Chief Shimumbi’s and other far flung areas.

The visibly annoyed Mr Bwalya said he came to withdraw money for the maize he supplied to the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) last year at the value of K3,000,000 but when he received K3,000 he said the money was very little.

He said that his wife would not accept the K3,000 instead of the K3,000,000 the two budgeted for.

He said villagers in Senior Chief Shimumbi’s area are not aware about the rebasing of the currency, adding that it would be very difficult for the community to conduct business in villages as they are used to the old currency.

Mr Bwalya felt that business men and women would take advantage of the situation by stealing money from them.

Mr Bwalya, who appeared uncontrollable, appealed to the government to consider intensifying sensitization programmes before villagers are robbed of their hard-earned money.

After receiving the new currency, Mr Bwalya went round the shops, converting the new currency to the old for fear of being beaten by his wife.

The new currency started circulating this morning after the bank opened and a snap survey showed that Mr Bwalya was not alone in that predicament.

Some businessmen were also rejecting the new currency, thinking it was a fake Kwacha.

Fetilizer meant for farmers at Banakaila was looted by villagers when a truck carrying the commodity got stuck in the deep rain mud between Keemba GRZ clinic and Munyenze FRA depot where it was destined for distribution by the Ministry of Agriculture. Scores of ox- drawn Scotch carts locally known chikochi were seen ferrying the commodity to diverse destinations.

The Nteme to Munyenze road was funded by GRZ for grading in 2009 but funds were allegedly misapproprited by the constituency development committee who shared the money. Area Member of parliament, Highivie Hamududu allegedly inflated materials receipts and diverted a grader that was meant for road rehabilitation and took the grader to his farm plot. Farmers who sought anonymity said, the road was so immpassable in the rain season and posed a challenge to transportation of sick people, pregnant mothers, medicines for Banakaila and Moonzwe clinic and other essential needs. One headman requested the office of the Vice president to consider the area as a Disaster.

By press time, the area member of parliament was not reachable as he was nursing wounds that he sustained during a murder case enquiry where Chief Hamusonde and him ( Mr. Highive Hamududu) allegedly received bribes to silence the bereaved family. This was after one villager plunged in a screw driver into the heart of his drinking mate during a christmass party at Koonje in the heart of Bweengwa constituency. The entire Monze police command was in Bweengwa to bring order and peace in the community. The MP has recently struggled to get reception by the people because of the poor state of roads and his involvement in perverting justice jointly with Chief Hamusonde

This is a serious embarrassment to the m.p. because the road has remained impassable during the rain season, while needs thick twice to drive their personal vehicles to the village during the dry season because the road is left with serious galleys after the rains. He has always taken it lightly because he drives high vehicles.
If the issue of him (MP) diverting resources meant for the road is true he should be held accountable for the looting of fertilizer for farmers who paid for it.
