MINISTER of Foreign Affairs Given Lubinda has narrated to the court how unknown persons fraudulently siphoned KR2,000 (K2 million) worth of mobile talk time from his Airtel sim card.
Mr Lubinda, 49, who is also Kabwata member of Parliament, said he was on several occasions unable to access his mobile number and was later informed by the police and the mobile provider’s agents that some unknown persons had been tampering with the smart card.
He was testifying in a case in which a visually impaired Lusaka-based journalist Jairos Tembo is charged with 14 counts of unauthorised access to data and theft of Airtel talk time from politicians and a businessman.
“On several occasions when I complained to Airtel, the agent for mobile service provider told me that they suspected someone was fraudulently tampering with my simcard and thereby getting through to my phone. “Later, the police approached me and asked me and confirmed what the Airtel agents were telling me that some unknown persons have been tampering with my sim card,” Mr Lubinda said.
He said when the matter came up for continued trial before principal resident magistrate Aridah Chulu in the Lusaka Magistrate’s Court yesterday that he used to lose talk time without using it.
And Muvi TV proprietor Steve Nyirenda testified that Tembo, who is his cousin, fraudulently stole mobile phone talk time from him.
The matter comes up for continued trial on January 31.

Its only in Zambia where one would even think of honouring a thief. Impaired or not a thief is a thief. Just like a good blind musician is a good musician. Let the due process of law take its course and stop advocating rubbish.

Technically speaking, what was stollen is called AIR TIME. TALK TIME is the length of time that your phone battery can maintain electric power when you talk. Anyway, we understand Zambians.
