South Africa’s Only Black Billionaire Donates Half His Fortune To Charity

Henry T. Heald once said; “When lack of funds prevents hospitals from functioning efficiently and fully, private philanthropy of all kinds must help. The difference it makes in terms of human betterment represents the kind of happiness that money really can buy.”
This is why Patrice Motsepe, South Africa’s first and only black billionaire has announced he is giving away half his wealth to improve the lives of the poor.
The mining magnate said the money would be handled by the Motsepe Foundation to address education and health issues.
Motsepe said he was inspired by two of the world’s wealthiest men, Bill Gates and Warren Buffet, who are encouraging billionaires to donate to charity.
According to Forbes, Mr Motsepe has a net worth of $2.65bn (about N417bn)
A lawyer born in the Soweto township, and also South Africa’s first and only black billionaire, Motsepe founded the publicly traded mining conglomerate, African Rainbow Minerals, which has interests in platinum, gold, coal and other minerals.
He made most of his mining fortune through the government’s black economic empowerment policy, which mandates that mining companies be at least 26% black-owned, says the BBC’s Pumza Fihlani in Johannesburg.
Patrice Motsepe’s interests is not limited to mining, he owns the Pretoria, South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns football club.
When Mr Motsepe made the announcement at an event in Johannesburg on a live video link, Microsoft founder Mr Gates praised his decision.
He said he was also going to join the The Giving Pledge, a campaign started by Mr Gates and investor Mr Buffet in 2010. So far more than 70 billionaires have signed up to it.
“I decided quite some time ago to give at least half of the funds generated by our family assets to uplift poor and other disadvantaged and marginalised South Africans but was also duty-bound and committed to ensuring that it would be done in a way that protects the interests and retains the confidence of our shareholders and investors,” Mr Motsepe said in a statement.
Mr Motsepe said he was also inspired by the spirit of “ubuntu” – an African belief system which translates as “I am because you are”, meaning individuals need other people to be fulfilled.
“South Africans are caring, compassionate and loving people. It has always been part of our culture and tradition to assist and care for less fortunate and marginalised members of our communities. This culture is also embodied in the spirit and tradition of ubuntu/botho,” he said.
Patrice’s wife, Precious Motsepe told the BBC that the move would help counter the impression that Africa is always waiting for outside help.
“Yes we’ve got challenges but we also have an opportunity, particularly in this century, to turn our continent around and portray Africa in a positive light,” she said.
“We can begin to do things for ourselves that show the world that not only are we recipients of aid but we can also begin to do things for ourselves.” [BBC]

To whom it may concern
Personal Story –
1) I am aged 53, Male, Married with Four School going Children and Qualified in Automotive Engineering. My full names are James Great Mwee I did my primary school and secondary school in Mufulira, Zambia. I was trained at Northern Technical College (NORTEC) in Ndola where I obtained an Advanced Technician Certificate in Automotive Engineering. I later worked for United Bus Company of Zambia (UBZ) and Roan Consolidated Copper Mines (RCM) respectively.
Disability Issues –
2)My disability came about as result of an Underground Mine Accident (Rock fall). I was carrying out repair works on a Front End Loader Machine. During the time a more than fifty kilo gram (50kg) of a Rock fell on my Right Arm crushing it beyond repair and I was quickly taken to the Hospital where I was admitted and treated for injuries I sustained. I was traumatised and devastated when my right arm was amputated from elbow. This happened more than two decades ago in an Underground Mine Accident (Rock Fall). With my disability it is difficult to find employment. I have Disability Identity Card Number:112 from Zambia National Association of Persons with Disabilities (ZNAPD).
Financial Hardship –
3)I have been all over in search of greener pastures but to no avail I have failed to succeed in life. I surely and honestly need some money to assist me in my day to day running of my home in order to support my family with food, medicals, transports to and from as well as school fees for my four children also to buy essentials. And I lack working capital to run a business in order to assist me to generate some income for self sustainability. I have difficulties in getting financial assistance from anyone to meet day to day requisites.
Income Efforts -
4)I have tried by all means to earn a living by attempting to seek for employment on full time or part time but all have fallen in vain. I have also tried to appeal for Donations or Grants from Churches, NGO’s, Government and others but all have failed to yield positive results. I just survive by doing small job in Automotive Mechanics here and there where I earn small income. I also receive my monthly compensation of less than Ten Dollars ($10) per month under Workers Compensation Board Number: 8129.
Specific needs –
5)I am earnestly appealing for a minimum Grant of One Hundred Thousand Dollars ($ 100, 000) only, as Capital Investment to Assemble Small Type of motor cycle engined cars such as Club Cars, Dazons, Mules, Trikes (Three Wheeled Bikes) etc. I also need financial assistance for Food, Transport, Medicals, School Fees and other requisites. And when these needs are met I am sure this will alleviate my financial woes.
Business idea –
6)My business Idea or Plan and Projected Sales and Costs are as available on request with initial required capital of $100, 000. Trans-Aim Engineering Ltd is a registered business entity established for the purpose of dealing in engineering products. The focus is to supply the business community and individuals within the District and outlying Towns in Zambia with cheap and affordable means of transport through assembling of fuel efficient motor cycle engined motor vehicles in light of the ever escalating fuel prices on the world market. It is planned to expand the business over the next 5 years through prudent efforts and growth in the identified existing product range.
The applicant decided to embark on a financing initiative in order to “jump start” the product thus meet the challenges of demand that has been identified. The targeted total amount for procurement of parts for assembling is in the range of KR500,000 to KR635,000 (US$100,000 to US$127,000).
It is envisaged that when funding is made available, the project will be spread over a four year period and source addition equipment and machinery from profit generated over the 4 years span. Management has put in place a growth rate of approximately 40% over the years due to a projected growth in demand on a progressive basis taking into account the minimal needs of the Assembly Plant.
In the marketing area, it is planned to increase awareness through our strategy plan that embrace adverts in form of Radio. Print Media, Banners, Leaflets and Door-to Door marketing strategies. The focus is on sensitizing the community and industry of our existence and products.
A training programme for our employees has been designed to ensure that the workforce is always “in-step” with the latest developments in the industry and be able to produce at the barest possible minimum production costs.
Yours Sincerely,
James G. Mwee

Not these free-masons we have in Zed who just show off that they are young, wealthy and yet they stole the money from privatisation which is public funds. They should give back some of it to the owners.

Sata said “When we are sitting here and eating what First Quantum is giving us, let us think of how many of our relatives have gone for three days without a meal. Yesterday I was in Chama, I saw Mr.Tom Mtine’s relatives, they are as thin as a thread. They don’t even know when they last ate. And here we are eating. We don’t even know what to do with what is going to remain.”

Mental patient; he is a creative psychopathy. Good ideas but are far fetched. Instead of asking for fertilizer to do a bit of farming; he is hallucinating about having $100 000, you need to be caged in chainama before you can say you are now forming a political party

James Mwee, economists mostly advise of starting small & aiming high. Your market research would have been best had you shown the success of a few 3-wheelers in your locality than envisioning Mumbai in Kasompe. Nice to note that U utilise ‘word perfect’ template

He is not giving half of his wealth, he is giving away half of the funds generated from his family assets. Read carefully these two are not the same thing. It means that he has other assets which generate income apart from the family ones, and all his other assets remain intact, but what he is giving away is half of the profit from the family assets.

I think this is the worst use of money. it encourages laziness. We need to put direct invest ment in people than govt stractures. The govt should tax the individuals to create a better world for all
