The morgue attendant and a male nurse at Liteta Hospital have been arrested for allegedly stealing from the dead in the Post bus accident.
The nurse was allegedly found with KR700 (K700, 000) which he claimed was given to him by a mortuary attendant arrested earlier in connection with the missing cash.
Central Province police commissioner Standwell Lungu confirmed in Kabwe yesterday that the nurse is in police custody.
Mr Lungu, however, declined to reveal the identities of both suspects.
“We have a male nurse from Liteta Hospital in custody. He was found with KR700 which he could account for and it would appear he shared the money with the mortuary attendant,” Mr. Lungu said.
He said the nurse was picked on Wednesday to help police with investigations into the looting of money and property from the accident victims.
Mr. Lungu said according to investigations, the mortuary attendant bought household goods in Lusaka valued at KR21,000 (K21 million) from money that could have been dubiously obtained.
He said the mortuary attendant has been charged with the being in possession of property suspected to be proceeds of crime.
Among the property he bought are a chest freezer, television set, DVD player, DSTV decoder, four inch mattress and a fan.
“He bought a lot of property. He hired a canter and went into Lusaka and bought a lot of things,” Mr Lungu said.
He said both the mortuary attendant and nurse will appear in court soon.
54 people perished in a horrific road accident on the Great North Road in Chibombo when a Zambia Postal Services Corporation-operated passenger bus collided with a truck laden with mealie-meal.
President Sata condemned the carnage and called for a stop to similar accidents and businessman Robinson Zulu has donated KR100,000 to families of the victims

How could a person in his normal state of mind do such an atrocity. Hope they come to their sences whilst in prison and repent.

Finally, the Liteta malukula has met his fate. The man is a pure drunkard and would have to be dragged by mourners from shebeens for him to open morgue for retrieval of dead relatives, must I add he would charge for being called from pub to do his job. Shame on the two employees for not respecting the dead. Let them face the wrath of the law.

What a disgrace. Honestly how could people be so wicked. Stealing from the dead. And that male name needs to be struck off by the general nursing council of zambia. He is not fit to be a nurse. Shame up on him. And he is also a shame to the entire nursing profession. Remember that you reap what you sow. Let him and his partner in crime the mortuary attendant spend their entire life in jail with hard labour.
