FORMER President Rupiah Banda has refuted reports that he attended a press conference held by opposition leaders in South Africa on Tuesday during which they called for Zambia’s suspension from the Commonwealth.
The opposition accused government of violating human rights, among other things.
Mr Banda said reports that he was among the people who attended the press conference are incorrect.
This is according to a statement released on Wednesday by Mr Banda’s administrative assistant Mikatazo Wakumelo.
“We wish to correct the impression created by some sections of the media that the fourth President of the Republic of Zambia was among the people who attended the press conference by Zambian opposition parties and civil society organisations in Johannesburg.
“It is our sincere hope that this record can be put straight for the benefit of the general public,” Mr Wakumelo said.
But a statement released by lawyer Richard Elsen on Tuesday stated that the former President was among the leaders who attended the meeting.
Meanwhile, some MMD leaders on the Copperbelt have condemned the opposition press conference in South Africa.
The Copperbelt MMD district chairpersons said at a press briefing in Kitwe yesterday that pushing for the suspension of the country from the Commonwealth will bring untold suffering to all Zambians, regardless of their political affiliation.
“The move is not only unpatriotic but also unZambian,” MMD Chingola district chairperson Jackson Kawaya said.
And party acting Kitwe district chairperson Anthony Chabunyengele said in a democracy, opposition parties are supposed to provide checks and balances to government and offer advice where necessary.
Major Chabunyengele believes that government is ready to dialogue with the opposition but only if they follow the right procedure in presenting their grievances.

THE QUESTION WE ZAMBIANS SHOULD ASK:
*ARE OUR OPPOSITION LEADERS AFTER CHECKS AND BALANCES OR TRYING TO PLAY THE INDIVIDUAL’HIT-BACK’?
*IS THE RULING PARTY GIVING ROOM TO CRITICS,ADVICE AND DIALOGUES?
*WILL THE INTERVENTION OUR OPPOSITION IS SEEKING FROM U.N.,COMMON WEALTH,INTERNATION PENAL COURT AND SANCTIONS HELP ZAMBIA?
*CAN’T REALLY THE RULING AND THE OPPOSITION WORK TOGETHER.
*WON’T WE SOON HEAR ABOUT ITEZI TEZHI BY-ELECTION AS ITS UPND MP WAS APPOINTED IN THE GOVERNWENT?
