Dear Editor,
Of late, there’s been talk about high GCE tuition fees. It’s the responsibility of GCE centres to ensure that the candidates they present to the Examinations Council of Zambia are ready for examinations. The fees help to recoup tuition costs. Many candidates who just pay for examinations and then go for private tuition or ‘tutor’ themselves are amenable to failure or to examination malpractices.
As for the ‘high’ tuition fees, it should be understood that ignorance is expensive. And the fees can’t be uniform because centres have different conditions, like high demand for places and varied academic staff qualifications.
In the distant past, GCE was mainly for people who had no chance to pursue regular school. But now some pupils just play about and don’t dread failing because they say ‘I will rewrite.’ GCE fees should even be higher for Grade 12 candidates who want to rewrite but can’t properly account for their failure. They never made hay while the sun was shining.

Mr. Kalipenta,
I really sympathize with your reasoning on the solution to curb the problem of poor results at Grade Twelve. Currently, fees are high and children of the rich are affording and even if they were raised, they will still keep on failing as they will know their parents will afford. The innocent poor children and adults who only depend on education as the only messiah to their miseries are the ones who even study hard and if fees were made affordable, they can help improve the results. Therefore, do not insight the public at the expense of the poor. Thank God you can afford but remember, others are in abject poverty despite being so intelligent. WATCH-OUT!!!1

It is strange how pathetic individual want to patronize other people who are simply trying to improve their education. It is high time in Zambia we started making education as cheaper as possible. Let us work towards making education affordable for everyone in the country not this nonsense the author of this article trying to insinuate! Let us help free people from illiteracy.

All the reasons given for the justification of higher fees do not seem relevant to the issue under discussion. In fact, a country with such low literacy levels should reduce the fees so more people could have a chance to basic education.

Here is a man who does not believe in second chances. Dull indeed! To think that every one who fails was playful is so shallow for you! Think again Maimbolwa!

very mayopic thinking.
it is ECZ that must evolve to deal with emerging challenges by now they should be able to offer more than one sitting.
and why do they close centers before they publish results. it should be that when your child fails he should be able to rewrite their exams that very year rather than have them spend two years at home waiting to write their exams

True. When fail they should not wait fir two years for them to rewrite their exams. Fees should not be increased because even the fees that are being charged right now are too high for some families. If we want more people to get educated then education should be afortable.

The author’s reasoning leaves much to be desired. It seems suffering to him is a tale. He has not witnessed how the majority of our population in the rural areas suffers. The govt is trying to provide free education and he is busy advocating for something else. Bull- shit!

Vry unfortunate that some pipo behave like the animal farm where all animals are equal but some are more equal than others.
